Flushing Town Hall will be mixing it up! their series continues with 2 cultures, 1 stage + an open dance floor. Merengue band Kompalsa meets The Chief Joseph Chatoyer Dance Co. & The Afri-Garifuna Jazz Ensemble!
This performance represents The first time Garifuna music and dance will be featured at Flushing Town Hall. The Afri-Garifuna Jazz Ensemble, Chief Joseph Chatoyer Folkloric Dance Co and J. Dove Productions will be together for the first time on the same stage.
The Afri-Garifuna Jazz Ensemble band features seasoned musicians who lead bands of their own and have come together for this performance featuring founding members Garifuna American Jazz Vocalist Lucy Blanco and Garifuna Musician James Lovell, Bassist Lavondo Thomas international Percussionist Ismel Wignall, Violinist Eva Lou Vossmerbauemer . The ensemble has been developing a new musical sound by fusing the language, rhythm and percussive instruments of Garifuna music with America's classical music known as Jazz. They have performed at various venues throuhout the city to well received audiences.
Chief Joseph Chatoyer Garifuna Folkloric Ballet of New York was founded to nurture and promote the Garifuna culture and identity in New York City. The Company has earned a reputation as one of the most acclaimed ambassadors of Garifuna culture, promoting the uniqueness of the Garifuna-American cultural experience and the preservation and enrichment of the American modern dance heritage.
J.Dove Productions is led by Garifuna-American choreographer Mariano Martinez . the author of the choreography for the Gari-Slide, a line dance set to the Andy Palacio' song Lidan Aba and successfully brought back the Gunchei formal dance of the Garifunas.
The Garifuna Language, Music and Dance were proclaimed Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

The Cultural Crossroads Concert Series concept was created by producer Clyde Bullard, in which two bands from two different countries come together to celebrate their culture through music and dance instructions for audience participation and enjoyment.
Flushing Town Hall celebrates 150 years as a historical landmark that serves one of the most ethnically diverse communities in the nation. Founder and Director Jo Ann Jones, Cobi Narita and Clarence "CB" Bullard started the "Jazz Live" series at Flushing Town Hall in 1994. Clyde Bullard became producer in 1998 and continues the The "Live Jazz" Series among other productions with an emphasis on culture and the arts with current Executive and Artistic Director Ellen Kodadek.
