“ Sharon Musgrave’s “Outflow” is an incredibly unique soul album, taking inspiration from jazz, funk, even flamenco, with some spoken word and rap. Songs can go from sounding like Erykah Badu to Us3, to Ledesi, to Amel Larrieux. I even hear a bit of Bitter:Sweet in “Smooth Ride”, a funk-tinged, atmospheric dance track. There is incredible diversity in not only the sound of each song, but also in instrumentation; songs like the lead single “Beautiful Music” have jazz licks sprinkled generously throughout the track, while others such as “Outflow” has folk and country inspired rhythm and melodies. One thing is for sure; no one will grow tired of listening to this album.
