All too often, writers, who craft the stories everyone else in the filmmaking process depends upon, are themselves marginalized at festival events. We created the Broadsides Lab to give them a turn for their work to enjoy the spotlight. We invite all the screenplay finalists to submit a scene which we then cast and have professional actors read for them and an invited audience. Once a filmmaker has been a part of our festival, we want to continue to support them in their craft. So we created the Legacy Project to give them a venue to use as their own. In the annual Invitational, any writer or filmmaker who has been a part of the festival can make a short film that fits the year's 3 rules and be guaranteed a screening during our Legacy Showcase. In addition, we screen a feature film of an alumna to give their work an added boost in our Legacy Feature program. Starts at 4pm!

This is the last open mic show of our Summer Series! On August 17th, we will be featuring former slammaster of the LA Slam Team, Damnyo; community-minded Hip Hop emcee, Neighborhood Kenny; universal poet and actor, Sean Hill; and Guest DJ Won. Damnyo is no stranger to poetics and has ambitiously competed in countless slams across Los Angeles. Neighborhood Kenny has always been so supportive of our space and is a conscious lyricist that speaks from his soul. Sean Hill is not only a genuine poet, but an amazing human being who truly builds with everyone around him. DJ Won was our first feature ever at Sunday Jump last year and this time he is coming back with a set of turntables to get your heads nodding and fists pumping. Always moving forward. Never stops. It all happens in Historic Filipinotown! --- //SLAM POET To understand the multiple levels of Damnyo da "Genius Chyld"'s poetry, one needn't look any further than her name. What at first blush appears both conceited and colloquial is, in fact, a reference to powerful feudal Japanese rulers ('daimyo') and a nod to famous poet Oscar Wilde who said "I have nothing to declare except my genius". Like her moniker, Damnyo as well as her poetry is historical, multi-faceted and cultural. Damnyo is an LA native who discovered the empowering effect of words during her teenage years and diligently worked to develop herself as an artist. While many of her peers enjoyed their first years in nightclubs, Damnyo spent her nights at local poetry venues, quickly becoming a well known part of the Los Angeles poetry scene. As the youngest member of the poetry scene, she was mentored by such noteworthy poets as Taalam Acey and since 2005 she has been a Serafemme artist, student, and advocate of poetry and her community. She has hosted several Los Angeles open mic venues and has produced numerous shows including Elements. She was also the slammaster/coach for the LA Slam Team in 2006 and wrote a book of poetry entitled "Trap'd". //SONG WRITER NEIGHBORHOOD KENNY, or NOHOODKENNY represents for all underprivileged, unheard, unseen from the depths of social, economic, personal struggle vying for self expression, voice, opinion in a world of conformists and acquiescence. NEIGHBOR K is everything and nothing. He is you; you are him: lover/upholder of culture, community, truth and light in a world of pain, terror, hypocrisy, and darkness. //ACTOR & POET Studying for 8 months in Beijing while performing Theater deeply impacted and enhanced the passion of living Sean Hill wishes to share with the world. His artistry embraces all people while reminding them of why we are beautifully fun beings regardless of what we go through or what we confront inside or out. As a SAG actor, band member, host, tourer of colleges/festivals, visitor of schools, inspirational talks, fundraisers & conferences, he promotes Team Inspire, Doctors Without Borders, National Animal Rights Day, the UN Women's LA Chapter, and BuildOn.org and would love your support to make his mission statement of universal inner & outer realistic, fun, and loving world peace happen as soon as possible. #AllLove #LetsBendReality ~ www.reverbnation.com/seanraymondhill //GUEST DJ DJ Won (aka Juan Espinoza) is a beat maker and sound selector from Baldwin Park California. An avid supporter of hip hop as a tool for organization, many of his gigs have been located at open mics, fundraisers and community spaces. His last project "Sampler 2" is the third self released beat tape and a continuation to the very first project released. DJ Won's music is free to download at djwon.bandcamp.com. -- Open mic sign-ups at 4:30 PM. Open mic begins at 5:00 PM. Host: Eddy M. Gana Jr. Address is Tribal Cafe: 1651 W Temple St, Los Angeles, CA 90026. Please support Tribal Cafe! They have healing green juices, exotic fruit smoothies, Filipino and Mexican fusion gourmet sandwiches and hot ciabatta paninis, and more! There will be good food and good vibes. http://www.tribalcafe.com/ There is a limited parking lot behind the venue. Free street parking is available across the street on either Belmont Ave. or N. Union Ave. The mic will be open for poets, musicians, emcees, and every artist that would like to share and build a community with us! We have only two community guidelines: (1) Free speech, not hate speech and (2) Express, not impress. As a safe space for all who have ever been marginalized, express free speech and share your story!
