This is the last open mic show of our Summer Series! On August 17th, we will be featuring former slammaster of the LA Slam Team, Damnyo; community-minded Hip Hop emcee, Neighborhood Kenny; universal poet and actor, Sean Hill; and Guest DJ Won. Damnyo is no stranger to poetics and has ambitiously competed in countless slams across Los Angeles. Neighborhood Kenny has always been so supportive of our space and is a conscious lyricist that speaks from his soul. Sean Hill is not only a genuine poet, but an amazing human being who truly builds with everyone around him. DJ Won was our first feature ever at Sunday Jump last year and this time he is coming back with a set of turntables to get your heads nodding and fists pumping. Always moving forward. Never stops. It all happens in Historic Filipinotown! --- //SLAM POET To understand the multiple levels of Damnyo da "Genius Chyld"'s poetry, one needn't look any further than her name. What at first blush appears both conceited and colloquial is, in fact, a reference to powerful feudal Japanese rulers ('daimyo') and a nod to famous poet Oscar Wilde who said "I have nothing to declare except my genius". Like her moniker, Damnyo as well as her poetry is historical, multi-faceted and cultural. Damnyo is an LA native who discovered the empowering effect of words during her teenage years and diligently worked to develop herself as an artist. While many of her peers enjoyed their first years in nightclubs, Damnyo spent her nights at local poetry venues, quickly becoming a well known part of the Los Angeles poetry scene. As the youngest member of the poetry scene, she was mentored by such noteworthy poets as Taalam Acey and since 2005 she has been a Serafemme artist, student, and advocate of poetry and her community. She has hosted several Los Angeles open mic venues and has produced numerous shows including Elements. She was also the slammaster/coach for the LA Slam Team in 2006 and wrote a book of poetry entitled "Trap'd". //SONG WRITER NEIGHBORHOOD KENNY, or NOHOODKENNY represents for all underprivileged, unheard, unseen from the depths of social, economic, personal struggle vying for self expression, voice, opinion in a world of conformists and acquiescence. NEIGHBOR K is everything and nothing. He is you; you are him: lover/upholder of culture, community, truth and light in a world of pain, terror, hypocrisy, and darkness. //ACTOR & POET Studying for 8 months in Beijing while performing Theater deeply impacted and enhanced the passion of living Sean Hill wishes to share with the world.
