“Westbrook’s Sadplant sure branches out on this 11-song CD. Their straight-ahead punk core is supplemented with opening metal-style guitar licks and mid-song instrumental solos. The shouted words actually connect into important statements. These are unexpected frills, yet not indulgent ones. They don’t detract from Sadplant’s basic pure-punk instincts and ethics for an instant. “You Never Changed/The End of Fun,” for instance, has two titles, a meaningful lyric about friendship and getting fucked up (a frequent theme of Sadplant songs), multiple shifts of tempo or mood, a leisurely bass line and a lengthy guitar fade-out … yet gets it all done in two-and-a-half minutes.
