The Ruby Friedman Orchestra - The Lonely Wild, The New Limb The Ruby Friedman OrchestraWebsiteMySpaceFacebookTwitterLinksFronted by vocalist Ruby Friedman, dubbed “L.A.’s own dynamic diva” by L.A. Weekly, the RFO is currently recording a full-length album, produced by Michael Beinhorn (Soundgarden, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Herbie Hancock, Hole). Los Angeles tastemakers have worn out their thesauruses finding the words to praise the RFO. LA Weekly called Friedman “L.A.’s own dynamic diva.” Hits praised the band’s “no-holds-barred, full-throttle, tonsil-twisting talent.” The Los Angeles Times’ Brand X boiled its reaction down to four stars and one word: “POWERHOUSE.” Record Collector News selected Friedman as the first contemporary artist to grace its cover. And Kevin Bronson’s Buzzbands.la Web site raved, “[Ruby Friedman] comes at you like a weather front, a thunder-and-lightning barrage of soul and nerves, capable of wrapping more drama into a phrase than most singers do in their autobiographies.” Lead vocalist Friedman’s stops-out performances – drawing on sources that include Bessie Smith, Etta James Aretha Franklin, Exene Cervenka, and PJ Harvey – and affecting original songs, and the RFO’s powerful instrumental attack have enraptured fans at such venues as House of Blues, the Troubadour, the Roxy, the Viper Room, Spaceland, the Echo, and the Hotel Café (where the band played a weekly residency). Joining Friedman in the RFO is a top-flight group of seasoned musicians: guitarist Adam Zimmon, whose credits include road work behind Shakira and Glen Campbell; bassist Dorian Heartsong, of Powerman 5000 and now with Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Experience; trombonist Ulf Bjorlin, who moonlights with L.A.’s Vaud and the Villains; and kebyoardist Arlan Schierbaum, whose many credits include a long-running stint with funk titans Mandrill. Friedman warmed up for the album with work on a solo single, a cover of Skeeter Davis’ “The End of the World,” which has already garnered airplay on KROQ’s “Rodney on the ROQ” (whose legendary host Rodney Bingenheimer asked Friedman to record the song for him), KCSN’s Americana Matinee, Kevin Bronson's Buzzbands KCSN and Moheak shows, and Dan Wilcox’s KCRW show. Ruby's original song “Drowned,” co-authored by Sons of Anarchy music supervisor Bob Thiele, was featured in the popular FX biker drama. The RFO’s “Shooting Stars” was used in campaigns by Fox Sports and for NBC’s America’s Got Talent. The RFO is coming off an active 2011 performance slate highlighted by a headlining gig at Los Angeles’ House of Blues and appearances in the U.K., including a private show at Iron Maiden lead singer Bruce Dickinson’s birthday cruise on the Thames and a sold-out show at London’s Troubadour. In 2010, Friedman appeared with Donovan at the David Lynch Foundation’s sold-out benefit at L.A.’s El Rey Theatre, and with the Scott Healy Tentet, a big band arranged and conducted by the keyboardist for Conan O’Brien’s late-night talk show.
