My reflections from Afghanistan

My reflections from Afghanistan

Now that I have been home a few days and have had the chance to reflect on my time in Afghanistan, I feel as though I can better describe some of my amazing experiences on the bases and with the soldiers...

We got to do some pretty cool things while we were in Kandahar. One of the most memorable days was when we were able to take a ride in some LAVs (Light Armored Vehicles) around the base...they even let me start it up, which pretty much made my day! I must say I felt pretty tough! It was really hot there...like 45 to 55 degrees...I can't believe the soldiers cope so well with the heat since they have to wear so much gear.

We had 2 shows cancelled while we were there. We were supposed to travel out to 2 other bases however, it wasn't safe for us to go so they kept us in Kandahar. We were all pretty disappointed that we wouldn't be able to get out to the guys at the Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) since I know they would have loved the change of scenery and music. Lucky for us, the next day, we ran into some of the soldiers that had come in from the FOBs and we ended up doing a spontaneous acoustic jam session with them. It was such a treat to see them singing along by the end of it. They gave us big bear hugs and thanked us for coming all that way to Afghanistan just for them. I tell ya, I never realized how important and how much of a morale booster it was for those guys to have us share some songs with them. We were all pretty emotional as we watched them drive away since we knew they were going back to where it was too dangerous for us to go. I thnk we all were pretty reflective and quiet for a while after that.

We experienced 2 rocket attacks during our stay and one of them happened during our show. I was lucky enough to get through my set without any disturbances, but Diane Chase was cut off by the sound of the sirens during her set. Her and I headed off stage towards the bunker...actually it was the same bunker that Toby Keith had to take cover in during his show a few weeks back. It was a pretty exciting night to say the least.

Most importantly, I had the chance to talk to many of the soldiers about their experiences in this war and in others, and I must say the stories I heard as they opened up to me were unbelievable. I have so much respect for them and what they have chosen to do for their country and for the betterment of other countries. If I have the chance to go back again, I definitely will. This tour is one of the best tours I have ever been on...one that I will hold close to my heart for the rest of my life.
