On Saturday, July 27, 2013 Melrose High Hopes NCPC 27x will be hosting the Summer Fiesta. Taking place between 11am and 3pm between Bancroft and Foothill on Fairfax Avenue in Oakland, the neighborhood block party will feature live music by local artists, including a mariachi band, Preston J. Turner’s band Pure Ecstasy, Ricardo Scales, Alma and the Blue Wave, Ronzoni Calzone, rapper She-Go, and rockers Stagefright. There will also be a poetry reading by Jack and Adele Foley. This will not be the first summer block party put on by the 27x Beat neighborhood group, which serves the Fairfax and Melrose neighborhoods in East Oakland. Some years the block party takes on Fairfax, as it is this year, and other times it has taken place on Ygnacio Avenue in front of Horace Mann. 2013 will be the 11th annual summer block party. Bouncy houses for the kids, face painting, and clowns are some of the family-friendly entertainment sources available at the all-ages event, which also promises to showcase the talents of local artist and artisans in an Artisan’s Bazaar. A pie and cobbler cook off, DJ music, mobile pet adoptions, and community awareness booths top off the event. Local attendees will also have the opportunity to meet their city council people and local law enforcement. Food trucks and snacks will be available for the dining pleasure of fair attendees. Additionally, the Fairfax Business District includes nearby eateries that will be open during the festival, The Red Pepper Taqueria and Simson’s BBQ on Foothill, and Louie’s Café on Bancroft. This year's festival is called the Summer Fiesta, and features an increased focus on the arts. In order to encourage the participation of local artisans and craftspeople, the organizers are waiving the $25 fee for booths for local artisans in addition to non-profits, CBOs, and Government Agencies.
