“Singer-songwriters are an abundant breed. Open mic nights in coffee shops and bars are often filled to the brim with them, though few move beyond playing a few of such shows. Local singer-songwriter Rob Randolph is one of the few solo acts who’s taken his music far beyond the dusty bar scene. Randolph just released his second record, The Truth We Tell Ourselves.... Despite the fact that Randolph is a singer-songwriter, much of his music is very band oriented. Randolph employs a backing band which includes drums, bass, keys and lead guitar. “Rob Randolph’s sophomore effort “The Truth We Tell Ourselves” is an album of powerful, acoustic performances with a dense, layered sound, ideal cranked up loud in the home or car. Bands like Counting Crows produced the blueprint for this sort of poignant, open, heart-on-sleeve rock and Rob Randolph and his talented band add contemporary bite, and some fine songs to the mix. I’m unlikely to get to see them anytime soon (I’m in Leicester, England, they’re in Arizona, USA – you see the problem…) but I imagine these songs would be just as effective and soul stirring on a huge stadium stage as they almost certainly are in an intimate club. Other standout moments are supplied with impressive regularity. The epic balladry of “Lonely Road” slips easily into the radio-friendly “Mister Sanjay” – nice backing vocals, by the way - and “Ties That Bind” brings it altogether, with drummer Dik Sol in especially good form.”
