Q: You have a great way of expressing yourself - is there a particular formula to your writing OR in the alternative - what inspires you to write?
A: Thanks. I wish there was a formula, it's pretty haphazard! The short answer is I write songs so I have something I want to sing. As much I always liked playing other people's songs, other people's words often ring false when I sing them. Not false for them, false for me. Being true to yourself and not playing yourself false is a challenge for everyone in life. What inspires you is whatever compels you to care enough--bothers you enough, angers you enough, inspires you enough, tickles your fancy enough--to write, There's not a lot new under the sun-- Love and Death and the mysteries therein are pretty much the curriculum. Some songs are written quickly, others go through lots of changes, and still others never come together (banging head against wall songs). Good songs almost write themselves, so it's more like you "discover" them, as if they always existed.
