“Srdjan Marinkovic offers a triad of themes, all cut from the same cloth, and all well-suited to TV commercial spots. “Rising” has piquant harps and heavy beats that conjure an upbeat, optimistic aura. The uber-kinetic “A Full Circle” melds bouncey keyboards and heavy beats for an IBM techie commercial vibe or videogame racecar music. “Wish” uses soothing synths as a counterpoint to bright, spry keyboard effects that scintillate. True, these tracks will certainly fit some situations, but we advise RG to develop a wider emotional palette.”

“Retro Grad www.myspace.com/zretrograd High quality ambient music served up to us from this talented Serb. I loved his dramatic use of synthesized strings to contextualize simple piano tunes and produce something that seems more than the sum of its parts, particularly on ‘White Keys’. I found the jazzy ‘A Full Circle’ reminded me of Faust whilst ‘Orbital’was rockier and more mainstream. All of the tracks show that he is capable of crafting sounds to please the ear and though a different style it reminded me a bit of some of William Orbit’s earlier work. Quite a few of the tracks are short vignettes and I often found myself not wanting the track to end so soon particularly on ‘Rising’. Perhaps he has mastered the art of “treating them mean and keeping them keen.” My favourite of the ten tracks on here was ‘the penguin’”

The outcome always appears to be something different. My numbers surprise even myself at the end. I’ve never got the whole idea at the beginning. What does 2011 hold for Retro Grad? I’d be very happy if I could realize a collaboration with video artists over the next year. Modern means of communication makes cooperation easier and that should be used.
