About

The creative force behind The Retainers are cousins Christian McLay and Jeremy Hunt. They have been making music together in the Auckland region of New Zealand since 2000. Producer Christian McLay (aka Madsickill) steps up as Beat maker, lead vocalist and plays keyboards and guitar, along with other instruments that are incorporated into his unique beats and Retainers live shows. Chris has been producing beats for 12 years  or so now, dabbling in such styles as dub, reggae, dub-step, drum n bass & hip hop. Over the years he has  worked with a variety of artists with different styles, including MC Mana of Rhombus, Commodores member Ronald LePread, Kaya, N.T.D. and many more.

Jeremy Hunt holds it down on the bass guitar when the band performs live, he also has a hand in creating some of the tracks for The Retainers. After living in London and travelling Europe and Peru, Jeremy returned to New Zealand at the beginning of 2006 to hook up with cousin Chris in developing ideas for dubbed out, funky, innovative rhythms.

Karl Smith, a long time friend, joined the line up in late 2007 as co-guitarist and back-up vocalist, building the rhythm section for the live act and adding that extra bit to the Retainers live shows.

After releasing two EP's, 'Beats rhymes & dubs' and 'Mad music', the boys have been making their sound accessible to listeners by focussing on web based distribution to get the music out there. With over 30 tracks online you can  check 'em out on www.reverbnation.com/retainersmusic  myspace.com/retainersmusic and facebook.

Now pushing on, Mr Madsickill has directed the first Retainers music video 'Rise up', an Aotearoa dub/hip hop pleaser ready for the air waves. The retainers will continue to move forward with their kiwi do-it-yourself approach to making music with the aim to inspire young musicians and artists to take control and get their stuff out there, no matter what. The Retainers "are all about the music, thats how we be workin now!"  Stay tuned... Peace!
