Making their maiden voyage to Australia this coming February is genre-bending UK act CORNERSHOP. Formed in the U.K around 1991, CORNERSHOP are best know for the massive 1998 crossover hit Brimful Of Asha, a fantastic slice of 90’s alterna-pop that garnered huge mainstream attention - including a UK #1 - courtesy of a remix by flavour of the moment DJ, Fatboy Slim. The album from whence it came, I Was Born for the Seventh Time provided further goodies in the form of second single Sleep on the Left Side and a Yoko Ono approved cover of the Beatles Norwegian Wood. US rock bible, Rolling Stone were even moved to describe '...Seventh Time' as one of the essential recordings of the 1990's. Handcream for a Generation upped the ante in 2002 and included further radio faves Lessons Learned from Rocky 1 to Rocky 111 and People Power (in the Disco Hour) before a seven year hiatus took CORNERSHOP off the map. By 2009, though, CORNERSHOP were back with both a new album (Judy Sucks a Lemon) and a renewed sense of purpose. “The psychedelic rock of ‘Who Fingered Rock’n’Roll’ is just one of the tracks the band delivers tonight with a confident swagger. ‘Soul School’ is a great rolling jam, impressively proficient for a band once notorious for their willful amateurism. A funky mugging of Bob Dylan’s ‘The Mighty Quinn’, and a Punjabi version of the Beatles’ ‘Norwegian Wood’, confirm that Cornershop retain their idiosyncratic sense of fun.” guardian.co.uk Moving into the present and 2011 saw the band release their latest full-length release, Cornershop and the Double-O Groove Of, a collaboration with Punjabi folk singer Bubbley Kaur. Six years in the making, 'Double-O Groove' was released to strong critical acclaim; it’s striking fusion of Punjabi folk blended with dance-crazed hip-hop grooves gives both a nod to the past and a wink to the future. “Cornershop and the Double-O Groove Of finds the band’s east/west fusion developed far past the experimental stage into deft and heartfelt songcraft.” - dustedmagazine.com Come 2012 and CORNERSHOP finally make it to Australia appearing at the invite of the Perth International Arts Festival and for East Coast headline appearances. "CORNERSHOP finished Club Uncut’s final night in Brighton with a set of psychedelic mantras and gorgeous pop, topping the best bill so far.” - UNCUT MAGAZINE 2010
