Raising Awareness for the Hungry and Homeless: Students Read Poetry with local celebrity Musicians DULUTH, MN: Please mark Friday, January 31st at 7pm on your calendar and join us for a family cultural event to raise awareness about the issues of homelessness and hunger. The people performing are youth and adults from Spirit of the Lake Community School, Harbor City International School and the local community who are generously giving of their time and talent, including local celebrity musicians Charlie Parr, Rachael Kilgour & Mary Bue. Nancy Lewis, teacher at Spirit of the Lake Community School explains the inspiration for holding this event: “Through reading poetry, students are drawn outside of themselves and their own concerns to gain a new perspective on issues that others are dealing with. To be empowered to take initiative and make a difference in other people’s lives is an important part of our educational philosophy.” All are welcome. Admission will be by donation, and the poetry book from which the poems are selected will be available for purchase during a reception at intermission. The donation proceeds from the door and the book sales (after publication cost) will go directly to Duluth Loaves & Fishes. Event is hosted by Spirit of the Lake Community School & Harbor City International School. Event will take place at Harbor City School (332 W Michigan St, Duluth). Spirit of the Lake Community School is a growing independent school in Duluth, Minnesota in its second year of enrolling students. Its curriculum and commitment to community are inspired by Waldorf Education. Harbor City International School is a public tuition free school in the heart of downtown Duluth. Their focus is to provide high school students with a quality, college-preparatory education in an environment of support and belonging.
