“New York-based trip-hop act Puracane made an appearance at Bowery Electric on Thursday for a show that was part birthday celebration for one of the band members and part album release celebration for I’ve Been Here the Longest (out now on Astraea Records).
The band, fronted by singer and British expat Ali Rogers, delivered a pleasant mix of downtempo and danceable tunes, blending guitar, drums and organic percussion with electronic atmospherics and groovy, bass-driven melodies. At the start of the set, Rogers indicated that she was suffering from allergy/sinus problems but in spite of that, her vocal range and strong alto voice were still palpable as she belted out the notes, alternating between high and low, often within the same song. While the band’s sound is largely reminiscent of the early days of trip hop… a little jazz and pop influence was also evident.
