Takoma Park, MD, US | 10:30am

Since its inception in 1978, the Takoma Park Folk Festival has been a community affair, organized by volunteers from Takoma Park and the surrounding area. The Takoma Park Folk Festival continues to be an event by and for the community of Takoma Park, and its all-volunteer organizing committee and performers maintain the legacy of founder Sam Abbott. Local organizations that support youth and youth activities are Festival beneficiaries. Parents and supervisors of these organizations, as well as children, serve as volunteers on Festival day to earn the funds, which are distributed after the Festival, to help support specific projects cited in their proposals. We are grateful for their efforts, as well as the efforts of all those who work so hard to make the Festival a success. TPFF, Inc., is supported in part by grants from the Takoma Foundation, the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County, and the Maryland State Arts Council, an agency funded by the State of Maryland and the National Endowment for the Arts

Percussive, finger-style acoustic guitar, tribal percussion and lush male-female harmonies are the signature sound of ilyAIMY. The songs, a modern take on folk and roots music that includes elements of alternative rock, metal, country and R&B, have been recognized by the nation’s most prestigious festivals and contests. Primitivity is a rock cello quartet from Washington DC that blends elements of classical, post-rock, and hard rock music. Consisting of cellists Devree Lewis, Natalie Spehar and percussionist Robby Burns, all from the University Of Maryland School of Music, the group is led by 2010 Strathmore Artist in Residence and cellist Loren Westbrook-Fritts. Playing the music of Led Zepplin, The Beatles, Muse, Megadeth, Apocalyptica and Metallica, Primitivity also premieres their own original works. The band’s debut album, Plays Megadeth For Cello, has received critical acclaim from fans and praise from Megadeth’s frontman, Dave Mustaine. Primitivity blends refined classical approaches and the new sounds of rock into a unique concert program that redefines the cello for the 21st century.
