Picture of a Girl is an ambitious and unconventional up and coming band from Helsinki mixing delicate jazz melodies and ethereal vocals with ambient art house pop with subtle hints of soul and a dash of folk creating a distinctly unique sound that escapes all stale and restrictive definitions.
As a concept of a loose collective Picture of a Girl was born a long time before the actual band as we now know it came to be. It was roughly around 2003 when Tuomas Aro started to organize various more or less disorganized sessions in various places with even a more varying and irregular group of people. At that time it wasn't really about a band as much it was about the music and the sound.
It took a while for the core group to establish, not least because each of the five current band members was and still is constantly busy working on a number of projects of their own. As always with good things it takes a while for the momentum to gather. Nevertheless, slow but steady, the project was going forward.
So, it was sometime during the summer 2006 when the band moved into a new practice studio, started playing together more consistently, when as a natural course of things, the band's unique sound started to define itself and songs began to fall into form.
The following fall when the band went through its material they found out that there was enough to pick songs for a coherent set to play at gigs. And as it happens, the first show was coming up too. Thus, the band was pretty much all set up. Or, almost. The only thing that was missing was the name. You know, something for the band to call themselves. Around that time Juho Vanhatalo had taken over responsibility for the band's lyrics, those trademark, somehow nonchalant yet intellectual lyrics that make you feel longing and presence at the same time. Juho's lyrics were the key to the ever so pressing name dilemma as well, since just about two seconds before the posters for the upcoming show were to be send to the press a line from Juho's lyrics popped up into the conscience, Picture of a Girl had seen the light.
Hyped by the progress and good reception of the debut show the band marched confidently into a recording studio for the first ever recording session for Picture of a Girl. As a consequence of which, the much praised and critically acclaimed debut EP came out May 2007. To no one's surprise the record release concert at Korjaamo was a huge success and the new songs received a well deserved appreciation from the exhilarated, sold out crowd of 200 that had packed the club. As a figure of speech, for Picture of a Girl, the shit was officially off the hook.
So, you find yourself asking what's going on with the band now. Rest at ease, for during the summer the band is busy writing new material and next fall they will be performing on a venue near you. Needless to say, most definitely something not to miss.
