Penya was formed by Colombian singer/songwriter Angelica Lopez in 2009. Hailing from Cartagena on Colombia's caribbean coast, Angelica grew up immersed in local folklore and inspired by the music flooding the airwaves from elsewhere. A professional singer by 17, Angelica toured to London where she formed Penya with 6 like-minded musicians. In January 2012 Penya's debut EP was awarded the "Best of 2011" accolade by elWatusi.com - the leading online retailer for Latin music today. Penya's recent single "Tu Recuerdo" has also been championed by BBC Radio DJ Gary Crowley and received repeat airplay on BBC London Radio. Angelica's voice has been described as a unique combination of the ethereal with the earthy - think Bjork meets Celia Cruz! Penya sound like a band with strong Latin roots but with influences from all over the planet. This is reflected by the band members playing credits which include: Melt Yourself Down, Anga Diaz, Incognito, Joss Stone, the Gnawa Musicians of Morocco, Clave y Guaguanco, Olodum, and Flora Purim. "Angelica Lopez' voice is perfect and her inspiration is powerful" - Lubi Jovanovic, DJ/Journalist, Straight No Chaser Magazine "Penya has nailed that singular sweet spot: Smart, and with great hooks. Some of the best World dance music out there" -Bruce Polin, elWatusi.com More info: penyaband.co.uk - See more at: http://latinosinlondon.com/events_view.php?id=885#sthash.U9S47QjX.dpuf
