Q: Wonderful artistry in your playing... such a delightful touch... I wish I had taken lesson, I can only play by ear. Did you learn by ear first?

A: I'm sorry Mike....I thought I had answered this question, but browsing around in my RN site, I find I hadn't. So you asked if I had learned by ear first. The answer I guess is 'no'. I was pretty young when I started playing, and my mother (we were in a very small Montana town) taught me the basics of reading. However, when I was probably 7 or 8, I heard two different people playing by ear - all the pop tunes we heard on the radio back in those days - and I was inspired by them to try it. So I did at that time. Then a few years later I can remember playing the melody and then just playing triads - up and down the scale - til I found the right sound for the chord to go with it. We were about 90 miles from the nearest music store, so this was next best. But the 'touch' that you mention, I'm quite sure I developed through playing classical music. I wasn't born with it, and so if that's something you want to work on, you can start in at any age! I do have a lot of ideas about that, though - mainly, the best thing is to drop into the keys all the way from your shoulder, with all the energy flow in your body going right into your fingerTIPS and into the keys. It's the energy flow - similar to Tai-Chi or something - that does it for you. It's not dead weight, and it's not muscle power. Trying to use your muscles gets in the way. Going into the keys in that way affects the tone. Just give it a try. And be sure to ask me more questions if you would like to! And BTW, it's never too late to learn to read music!
