Interview with The Trees

The Trees are an Indie/Alt band from London, England. Due to popular demand, they’re making a comeback after slowing it down for a few years, so it’s no surprise that they were voted Band of the Month for November! Read a teaser of the interview that will be in the upcoming issue of INCLINATION, and then check out their amazing music on their myspace page or LastFM.

Your style is very reminiscent of 60s/70s Psychedelic music; in fact you even do a cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Sound of Silence”. Did you all come together from a common musical interest or was your direction something that came later?

Tony: I think we all have similar interests in music both contemporary and past, it wasn't a conscientious effort to sound a particular way its just sort of happened and we never wrote or recorded a song to slot into a particular genre. Simon: I know the sound I bring to the band is heavily influenced from my fathers record collection, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Beatles, Cream, it’s the music that shaped everything I do musically, in someway or another.

Back to “Sound of Silence”- Great job! Why did you decide to cover that song?

Simon: we wanted a song to end our set on, a good cover, something that’s memorable. We tried various songs REM, Man on The Moon, The Who: I can see for miles, Pink Floyd, Bike, but couldn’t really decide, then one day while watching a reality show on TV, I heard the song and remembered how good it was, so me and Tony tried it and did it the same as the original, and it was ok, nothing special, then we forgot about it for a few weeks, then feeling inspired I went in to the studio and just recorded it and did the vocal in one take, no overdubs because I didn’t think anything would come of it I didn’t bother correcting the little mistakes, Tony came round put his bass down and it was finished it only took about 8 hours, the best songs usually happen like that.

Your video for “Stop Talking” was our Video Of The Week at the beginning of November, can you tell us about it- who made it, how etc?

We make all the videos ourselves using stuff we've recorded ourselves and stock footage bought from various sources on the net. It was just a bit of fun really but people liked it so we did more.

The Best of 2009~ Editor's Picks

Top 5’s of 2009

I was watching High Fidelity the other day and appreciating my Chicago with it’s references to the Double Door and the Chicago Reader and then of course with the whole theme of underground music it made me wish I had a record store to do my work from. So in the spirit of High Fidelity and John Cusack I give you my Top 5’s of 2009.

Top 5 Albums:

1. Articles of War by The Sermon- Looking for that genuine rock n’ roll vibe? This is your record right here! With influences like MC5, The Stooges, Howling Wolf, and 13th Floor Elevators you’ve got your soul, punk, psychedelic and your rock all in one package, I guarantee you can’t sit still listening to this.

2. Red Right Return by Janus- Not one track is a miss on this ever increasingly popular album. Their first single Eyesore is brilliant and getting oodles of airtime- make sure you check out the awesome video too. 3. Visions of the Lifted Veil by Fashion Bomb: With the recurring theme of Armageddon running through their album, the song writing is flawless and you can tell a lot of time and work went into the recording. Fashion Bomb is a band you can instantly recognize from their distinct and original sound.

4. May You Live In Interesting Times by Ideamen- I love originality and when you listen to Ideamen that’s what you get, and when you think you’ve figured them out they completely change things up on you, even if it’s in the middle of a song. Interesting is putting it mildly! 5. Flowers In The City by Elke Robitaille- Her album was inspired and written while on the road and I just love her haunting melodies and addicting vocals mixed in with the eclectic sound of cellos, didgeridoos and banjos that make their appearance on this record.

Top 5 Videos:

1. Eyesore- Janus 2. Dreaming of America- Firebug 3. Flashing Red Light Means Go- The Boxer Rebellion 4. Cracks In The Armor- Killola 5. Across Heracles Towards- Noctem

AMERICAN ANTI-GRAVITY~ TRANSPARENT (review)

American Anti-Gravity (Chicago) Transparent (Self Released and Produced)

American Anti-Gravity songs remind me of a good shag: They start off slow and lazy and build up to a frantic and loud finish. Transparent is no different. Getting 2010 off to a good start they released their first brand new song in a long time on myspace at 12.01am Jan 1st so click on over to www.myspace.com/americanantigravity and tell me you don’t also love the trippy sounds of the eerie synthesizers and vocals preluding the onslaught of sonorous power from all directions, especially the guitar solo that brings us to that satisfying climax. But don’t expect these guys to cuddle after, they’re busy this year making lots more music and preparing to unleash other projects they’ve been working on.
