Singing palms of Cuba

February 2015, I Boeckel published ‘Singing palms of Cuba’ at the American publisher America Star Books. Earlier this book was published in Dutch by Free Musketeers. ‘Singing palms of Cuba’ is published in the USA, Canada, UK and Australia. 'Singing palms of Cuba" is entirely devoted to his travels to Cuba that he visited sveral times between 2000 and 2005. The main theme is Cuban music. As a percussionist, he started looking for new techniques and he took lessons from Cuban masters. As a journalist, he explored the musical trends of the island. The love Cuban for music led to many musical meetings and brought him closer to the 'real', poor, and sometimes surreal Cuba. The stories also gave an overview of the daily life in Cuba under Fidel Castro. His meeting with a doctor of Che Guevara during the revolution is described in a seperate chapter. With unique never-before-published photos of the legendary revolutionary. The book also includes an extensive interview with Juan de Marcos González, former bandleader of Grupo Sierra Maestra and the Buena Vista Social Club. In the interview De Marcos spoke extensively about the creation of the Buena Vista Social Club. 'Singing palms of Cuba’ is an unusual book with stories about an unusual country. It is a book with rhythm. Rik van Boeckel published articles on Cuban and World Music in Jazz Magazine, Jazzism, Oye Listen, Our World, Caribbean & Latin magazine Pleasure, Contrast, State Magazine, Beyond, Global Rhythm (USA) and LA Ritmo (USA). He currently writes for Jazzism, Written In Music ( www.writteninmusic.com ) and Cultuurpodium ( www.cultuurpodium.nl ) about world music and jazz. End of 2014, he published in jazzism an interview with the legendary Cuban singer Omara Portuondo about Buena Vista and the remake of "Magia Negra, her debut album from 1958.
