Tribes Stories: The Gangster Poet El Extreme Luis Chaluisan Amy Shand is producing a documentary for The New School on the blind guy (Steve Cannon) and Tribes past and present, she's looking for 1) poems/writing about or inspired by Steve/Tribes/LES 2) old footage and photos. Please email email@example.com or send her a facebook message! Many thanks! Vignettes from the world of Tribes, a non-for-profit arts organisation run out of Steve Cannon's Lower East Side abode. There is no other place like Tribes, and with the increasing gentrification of the LES, there is slim chance that there ever will be. The diverse, inclusive, artistic community that keeps it alive through the never-ending stream of art exhibitions, installations, poetry readings, music nights... is a living, breathing homage to decades past - it's managed to retain its bohemian charm and artistic edge embodying the spirit of it's, now blind, 76 years young, founder Steve. Enjoy these 'takeaways' from the Tribes brown couch, and if you're ever in the neighbourhood, drop in and share your art.
Thanks to Maria Hernandez organizational skills, I have begun the process of moving back to Puerto Rico once the documentary "Rocker Roller Rican" is completed making the rounds of film festivals in the United States. My friends Eric Ayala and Linda Rodriguez support the idea of my relocating to Puerto Rico and I now have established contact with more than a 1000 musicians on the island www.reverbnation.com/luischaluisan
What is my plan about returning to Puerto Rico? The island has a rich musical tradition and Boricua Musicians are playing all types of music. Maria Hernandez has the Dominican Republic covered. Tina Chaluisan has the US Cultural scene in control. And Izzy Sanabria remains the main source international Salsa news. We feel having salsamagazine.com based in Puerto Rico will result in reporting on the next big thing in Latin music.
While my relocation to Mayaguez, Puerto Rico is set for 2016, I have already begun to communicate with musicians on the island. The town of Ponce is only an hour away by car from Mayaguez. Here's some information about the town: salsamagazine.com in Puerto Rico http://lnkd.in/dqWSM6u
Interesting day. First my phone went completely awry and couldn't use it all day. I thought I had to buy a new one immediately. Then at 6:30 PM it began receiving a signal. Let's see if it was just a temporary problem given there were tornado winds that swept through the region last night and perhaps Towers were affected. To pass the time I re-entered the world of You Tube and have set up a Private channel to store the footage for the upcoming documentary Rocker Roller Rican and perhaps release the finished work both on pay per view Vimeo and You Tube (by the way BLIP TV sent me a nice check for the WEPAwebTV stations we shut down.) The organizing of the 3000+ DVD's I completed this weekend has put me on a path of structure very different from my early forays into creating web content. You Tube wants to be the new TV. As such, my professional experience in Broadcast television (and the experience producing the Latin NY Salsa Explosion) is guiding me back to my true Producer qualifications. I can truly say all the elements have come together so I can create the quintessential piece summing up the 38 years since I went professional in 1975 with the Alliance of Latin Artists and our Ronald Chaluisan, Luis E Figueroa Jr Al Brizuela ADORACION Dance Company in NYC. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwNEbUMo9jMSsX84uh0-fmA

Art does not grow out of thin air. http://www.reverbnation.com/luischaluisan/songs It is the summation of one's life experience and education. I have been fortunate to have been trained to observe, memorize and archive the world around me not for personal gain but as being part of the Latino Experience in America. And at this moment I have organized the process by using the tools that ReverbNation provides (1964-Present) that follow the steps from first waking up to the realization that I was a part of and not apart from the nation around me. And as such I have 180 moments captured in audio, video, art and pictures where I am sharing the Good, The Bad and the Ugly with you all not only as a Nuyorican from The Bronx but as an Eyewitness to History.

Young Lord Minister Of Culture Eddie Figueroa 1977: “The Arts is the vehicle we're going to use to illustrate this transition we must undergo in order to advance. When the artist is in touch with his art and its really happening something else is happening. A heavy spirit comes through that is bigger than the musicians or artists creating them. We want to experience that more, study it, articulate it and get the information out." Pictured above My brother Ron and I in our original apartment on Dean Street in Brooklyn 1963.
