So many exciting things happening at the moment I thought it might be a good time to let everyone know about them!
Ok...so this weekend on Sunday the 2nd of October I'm playing at the Semaphore Music Festival. I'll be playing at the Semaphore RSL with a whole swag of other folk artists and i'll hit the stage at 2:15pm. This will be my first festival appearance and I'm super excited about it so it should be a great event! You can find more details at www.semaphoremusicfestival.com/
Next on the list between the 21st and 23rd of October I'll be doing a swag of things at my first appearance at the Fleurieu Folk Festival this year should be awesome fun!!
So the schedule is....
Friday 21st of October - 8:30pm till 9pm at the Young Performers Marquee concert
Saturday 22nd of October - 1pm till 1:45pm at the Green Room Cafe
Saturday 22nd of October - 4:45pm till 5:15pm at the Young Performers Marquee concert
Sunday 23rd of October - 11:45am till 12:45pm - I'll be conducting a workshop on songwriting entitled 'Songwriting in a pre apocalyptic environment' where I will give my take on songwriting and disect the storys behind a few of my songs.

Oh and did I mention I'll be launching a new ep at the Fleurieu Folk Festival? Well I am... It's called 'Don't You Forget About Me' and leads with my take on the song of the same name (Yesiree that Simple Minds classic) and four original tracks. This is my first release of 2011 and as with last years releases is home recorded, folded and printed. It will also feature my SCALA award winning track 'Childhood' and will retail at the everyday low price of five dollars (basically this *just* covers my cost in producing the cd)
So the other exciting recent event was winning the 'Open Demo' category in the Songwriters Composers and Lyricists Association 'Festival of Original Music' awards for my song 'Childhood' and also receiving a highly commended award for my song 'Perfume'. To round out the year I have two shows coming in December at The Grace Emily.
Firstly Sunday the 4th of December I'll be playing at The Grace Emily supporting my good friends Brillig at their filmclip launch for their fantastic take on 'The Hearse Song' I've heard some rumors of what this clip will entail and it sounds like they are going to be at their swaggering Brilligy best! Billed as 'The World’s Greatest Spaghetti Western Apocalyptic Folk Blues Singer' Self Preservation Society is the solo outing for Adelaide Singer/songwriter Tristan Newsome.
A seasoned performer, Tristan’s shows are captivating and endearing. Tall tales and heart-on-sleeve song writing is his hallmark, visiting traditional forms of writing mixed with modern & historical themes.
Whilst mainly performing with just an acoustic guitar and vocals, Tristan is a multi-instrumentalist who also uses Ukulele & Banjo for his performances.
Self Preservation Society has a predominantly country, folk, blues & roots sound with a strong story telling element in the vain of Townes Van Zandt, Nick Cave, Johnny Cash, Paul Kelly, Tom Waits & Bob Dylan who are also Influential to the SPS sound.
Prior to taking on Self Preservation Society as a full time solo project Tristan was the guitarist/singer/front man for Adelaide rock & roll band The Flying Squad who gained some notoriety for their live shows & energetic music drawing on influences from 50’s rock and roll, country & more, then modernising that sound.
The folk/country with a touch of blues & rock n roll sound that is SPS has been included to play as part of the amazing line up of musicians in the upcoming Semaphore Music Festival 2011 and the acclaimed Fleurieu Folk Festival 2011, where he will also be conducting a number of song-writing workshops.
Also in 2011 Tristan entered two songs into the Song writers Composers & Lyricists Associations annual ‘Festival of original music’ competition. On September 1st SPS was proud to receive a highly commended award for the song ‘Perfume’, then topping off the night by winning the category with the song ‘Childhood’.
Tristan collaborates with a variety of Adelaide music identities on various live & recorded projects so you have possibly already heard or seen him around town in one of these chameleon-like guises. Self Preservation Society is regularly seen performing at numerous notable musical venues around Adelaide & South Australia
Self Preservation Society released a series of three homemade themed EPs in 2010, as well as a live album ‘Live at the Wheaty’. All can be found, for free downlodd, at www.selfpreservationsociety.net.au
All Self Preservation Society production – recording, burning, printing and packaging is done independently in Tristan’s home studio ‘den’ at home in Athelstone, South Australia.
An SPS show serves up a night of humour, wordiness, cleverness and most of all a great story telling, so come along!
