"Unstoppable" CD Review (The Smooth Jazz Ride)

Zoe — Unstoppable Mar. 26, 2013

A pleasant feel-good listening treat came my way recently from the group Zoe. The CD is called Unstoppable (due to be released on April 16), and boy, is it ever chock full of great material. An 18-track listening experience that borders on heavenly.

I reviewed Zoe’s last album back in 2010, an effort called Let’s Fly. I was absolutely taken by the material then and thought that it probably couldn’t get any better than that. Well, in my opinion, it just did with this new release. You are seriously hard-pressed to find a bad or even mediocre track here as the group plays serious grooves as though those grooves were the only “living” things in the world.

Drawing on its own very competent writing skills, many of its members contribute to this album. They are also joined by Grammy winner/Oscar-nominated guitarist Jim Peterik (who is a powerful story unto himself), the lovely trumpeter Cindy Bradley, keys giant/producer Jeff Lorber, and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer bassist Chip Shearin.

The group, in case you’re unfamiliar with them, consists of Reginald Harris doing the honors on sax (and he can just smooth you out), keyboardist/vocalist Cleveland Belin, Jr., drummer David Ferebee, bassist H. Maurice Fonville, and percussionist and trumpeter Bolivar “Chico” Guadalupe. Each is a true master of his instrument. That much you can hear right from the start of the opening full track (there is a brief interlude first –which is also not be ignored).

Because I am so taken by this group’s music and its ability to remain so consistent with its style and feel thus far, I would have a difficult time choosing faves. All of the tracks breathe and speak to you in that special classy way. “Always Thinking of You” with Jim Peterik, “It Is What It Is” with Cindy Bradley, the poppin’ “Heaven Bound,” and Lorber’s presence on the classic “Mister Magic” with that Zoe style are but a very small handful of standouts.

When the entire album is not only a standout but a testament to what true musicians can accomplish with focus, shared ideas, and that common bond of groove down to the soul, you can only sit back and let it all take you to all the beautiful places in your mind. People, this, quite simply, is great, tight stuff.

Zoe, once again, a big hats-off and kudos to you for an excellent job of finding those right buttons to push. Knowing those buttons will surely lead to some really wonderful things for this solid band. They are truly Unstoppable – Ronald Jackson

NuGroove 2’s CEO David Chackler announces Michael Tozzi as new label partner

(Philadelphia, March 21, 2013) ijazzglobal.com’s Michael Tozzi who began his radio career at WIOQ Philadelphia in ’76 and then at legendary WJJZ beginning in 1995 where he remained until 2008 has been tapped to join NuGroove 2 as a partner beginning immediately.

NuGroove 2 CEO David Chackler said "Michael is the type of individual that can pick the hits and can sense great new acts, and NuGroove 2 needs someone like that to help the label move aggressively into the 21st century with music’s ever changing landscape".

Michael continued his deep relationship with the music community while at WJJZ by becoming a voting member of NARAS in 2000, and in 2001 was voted to the Board of Governors, and also held the post of 2nd Vice President and co-chair of the MusiCares arm of the Recording Academy in Philadelphia.

In January of 2002, Michael along with the other members of the WJJZ staff, formally adopted the Grover Washington Jr. Middle School and all of its students, promising to help guide and enrich the lives of these wonderful young people. Through his experience and years in the music business, Michael became a member of the Philadelphia Music Alliance in 2002, in that same year was asked to join the Board of the Grover Washington Jr. "Protect the Dream Foundation".

In late 2008 a dream was realized when ijazzglobal.com was launched to promote jazz on a global scale on the Internet by streaming music via ijazzglobal.com!

With the help of Michael, NuGroove 2 has already signed its first act to the label and will release ‘Unstoppable’ by the Philadelphia based group, ZOE on April 16, 2013 to a global audience.
