Ugly Smith

I knew a guy named Ugly Smith. No joke. It was something awful to experience and build life with that name. He answered with a faint, half-hearted "Here" every time the teacher called roll. As he entered the business world, he introduced himself through gritted teeth. He often asked himself why he was shackled with that moniker for the entirety of his life. Damn his folks for this identity. Aw, he had learned to live with many hardships. God knows he had learned to tackle adversity with the tenacity and toughness those with other names couldn't bear. He had carried this name with him for so long that his fortitude was stronger than most. In fact, when some would complain about trivialities, he would grin like a father humored by a young boy's inability to lift a small dog. This name had made him strong. Still, he identified with this brand. He was humbled by it. It's not easy being labeled simply... Smith.
