John Lennon once wrote ‘Happiness Is A Warm Gun’
I’d prefer to think that in fact, ‘happiness is a Love Gun’, performed at ear-splitting volume with 3 of my best mates in front of packed houses in Bilston & Norwich as I made my (slight) return to the Dressed To Kill drum stool in Matt’s temporary absence.
It’s been around 2 and a half years since I’d performed on stage last with DTK, and as I sat in the van travelling to Bilston Robin 2 on the Friday afternoon, I quickly discovered that little had changed. The hire van was temperamental in its desire to start or indeed accelerate reliably, the bass rig still weighed a bloody tonne, Ash still consumed alarming amounts of food at a rate that would put competitive eaters to shame and, despite showing no such tendencies throughout the entire weekend, I was quickly re-christened ‘Mr Faff’ as the riotous pisstaking began in all directions. (Well I say in all directions, but the initial direction was largely from the mouth of Danny) We sang our traditional jolly little song as we drove past a certain footballing landmark near the M6 and before you knew it, there I was, soundchecking with the boys at the Robin 2.
The band’s setlist has been re-jigged a little for 2013, as I’d noticed when I saw the Stourbridge gig a couple of months ago…Love Gun to open, Say Yeah retained, less Gene songs due to Gary’s continued throat problems…but with my re-introduction the set was slanted a little towards the Catman, with Nothin’ To Lose, Beth and the ‘Sonic Boom’ Drum/Guitar solo being added, along with Hard Times, I Stole Your Love and Who Wants To Be Lonely for the devotees in the audience. Nothin’ To Lose was great fun for me – oh, come on…it was ALL fun for me! Most people who came up to say hello after the Bilston show (we didn’t get such an opportunity in Norwich) told me I’d been grinning almost the entire time I was up there…can’t help it, sorry!!
The sound was immense on both nights to be fair – the addition of the Fuel Girls who danced on stage with us at Norwich Waterfront was very pleasant indeed :o))) and it was just wonderful to be part of the whole DTK machine again. Even the driving through the night bit between gigs wasn’t as much of a chore. We even found the hotel without a wild goose chase for a change.
Thanks to Ash, Danny, Gary and Shane the button pusher for making it a laugh riot from start to finish and to everyone who came out to see us. I did say ‘never say never’ about a comeback when I hung up the old Catman cossie in 2010…and who’s to say I won’t don it again??
