The legend of Papa J. Otis

Some say he was a train robbing, booze smuggling, womanizer, who always slept with one eye open, keeping a consistent watch out for hobos attempting to steal his soulful heart.

Others claim that his spirit shifts over these lands and collectively gathers in the corners of experimental jazz funk fusion saxophone reeds only to tickle and pleasure our ears through a space-time worm hole capable of expanding minds and inducing sweat.

Still others say he was just a decent person who happened to own a company that manufactured elevators, but that his ghost is now searching for some quality jams to replace the crappy "muzak" and cell phone jingles that pollute many of his products.

There are even those who say that Papa J. Otis is not someone who was, is, or will ever be, but rather the stuff of pure legend -- a product of a chain of poets and songsmiths, an artistic creature unto himself, constantly created anew. Whence the secret of his survival and development over the years. Hence also the aura of magic surrounding him -- which is not any less real for folks who after all live off mystery and magic as much as their daily bread.

Wherever the truth lies, perhaps what really matters is the bad-ass yet playful spirit that Papa J. Otis embodies in all his forms. It is in that spirit that we carry on his legend.

This is a music site for Papa J. Otis, an original improvised music project (jam band) composed of PapaPatty (sax, keyboards), Otter Fundip (drums, sometimes bass), and Jon McKinney (bass, sometimes vocals).
