following my 27th birthday, and my twentieth year as a hobbyist musician, I have decided to pursue a new interest in my recording, studying and playing... I have decided to move into Jump Blues.... which, in all honesty, isn't that far off from the Rockabilly and Rhythm and Blues I've played almost exclusively since 2006. I have started work on instrumental jams of this music style... in the vain of Gatemouth Brown's "Okie Dokie Stomp"... the goal is to create what film editors call a "reel"... eventually I plan to use these recordings to form a swing/jump blues style band, with the intent of keeping this music "jumping and kicking"... I've decided to move in this direction because I am constantly wishing to improve my playing and understanding of the guitar.. I'll be "borrowing" a lot from some of my all time favorites, such as Charlie Christian, BB King, Junior Watson, T-Bone Walker, Hollywood Fats and of course some Hendrix, when the time is right.... I hope you enjoy this as much as I will...
It's been awhile since I made a blog post.. so, here it is... Life has been pretty busy on my end. I spent two weeks out at Ft. Knox, Kentucky. My son started walking and I have been working on two new songs! I have posted one new song up on the page already. According to the updates I receive through reverbnation.com the new song, "Shufflin' With My Baby" has been welcomed with open arms! Thank you to everyone for listening and enjoying the tunes I put up! "Shufflin' With My Baby" was an attempt to honor the blues greats of the past and present, T-Bone Walker, BB King, Clearance "Gatemouth" Brown and Junior Watson all served as influences for this tune! As for recording... I have decided to begin re-recording my existing tunes to present them in a more professional light. In reality, I have learned a few more recording tricks that will enable me to do a better job recording my material! lol Thank you for your support! Music would be meaningless without the open ears and warm hearts.
Happy Memorial Day,
It's days like today that make me feel especially lucky that I lead a great life. I collect a stable income, I am able to provide for my family and I live in a country that allows me to express myself anyway I see fit. I think it's important that we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice so that WE can enjoy simple freedoms, such as writing/reading a blog on reverbnation.com. Today I'd like to honor two heroes I served with in Afghanistan, Spc. Anthony Vargas and Spc. David Lutes, both loyal husbands, fathers and friends. I served with these great men as part of 3rd Platoon Charlie Company 1-61Cav 4th Brigade Combat Team 101st Airborne Division in Nangarhar, Afghanistan during OEF X as part of Task Force Bastogne. Both men gave their lives on November 8th, 2010 in Wazir, Afghanistan.
Never forget our heroes, past and present.
Welcome to Big Stephan's Rhythm 'N' Blues Revue and thank you for taking the time to read my blog.
I started this page so I would have a fun way to share my home recordings with those who share my taste in music. I grew up in a very music oriented home, so I was exposed to everything available to consumers in the mid 1980s and early 1990s. The first recordings I remember listening to were those of Harry Connick Jr. and Natalie Cole. I was introduced to Elvis' Christmas albums years later which is where I believe I formed my taste in music. I am a fan of all forms of music.. from the new Dubstep to the music of Bach and Beethoven, I am a firm believer that all music feeds off one another and plays a key role in the survival of man kind. I will admit that the rhythm and blues of the early 1950s is my favorite style of music to listen to.... which brings me to the point of this writer's first blog posting... The music created by Big Stephan's Rhythm 'N' Blues Revue is posted for all to share, but is ultimately here because it is something I'd like to see and hear on this website. I have no intention of trying to use my music to make a buck (all my songs are available for free download) and I am not explain to you why I prefer vintage blues music... I'm here to have fun making music, and hopefully write songs that you enjoy listening to.
thanks again for reading and listening! Big Stephan
