Hello friends, I hope you all had a happy and safe 4th of July. I had a great weekend of shows and enjoyed seeing some friends out and about as well. I have a fairly light schedule coming up this weekend. I will be attending a Johanesen Family reunion after my show on Friday in Tampa and will be spending the weekend on the east coast. Very excited about this reunion as it will be the first I have ever been able to attend. More on the shows and other things happening in a bit. First order of business… THANK YOU To The Venues - The Cottage, St. Pete. Museum of Fine Arts, SRQ Farmers Market, Mangia Gourmet and The Hub. To The Artists - Another week of solo shows, but I want to thank Billy Summer for helping me out with the gig at the MOFA & to Jun Bustamante and Joe B for making it out to my show at Mangia Gourmet. To you - Thanks to everyone that made it out to see me this past weekend. Always a pleasure to see you all and catch up as much as I can at a show. I am looking forward to the next time I see you. Speaking of… THIS WEEK THURS July 10 - Darwin’s on 4th - 7-10pm - SRQ FRI July 11 - Southern Brewing - 7-10:30pm - Tampa Two shows before I head to the reunion. Sarasota Thursday and Tampa Friday. I hope to see you there. RECORDING My home studio is getting set up here for tracking some projects I have in the works. I will have an in home studio for the first time ever. Most of my stuff has been in a garage set up so I am really loving the idea of having a more controlled and cleaner environment to work in. I am finishing up another kids CD with Adrianne for our follow up to Fun To Be Fit. Most tracking is done but with a couple of moves for me, we have been delayed. I am looking forward to wrapping up on the tracking here and getting the tunes to mix / master and out to the kids and parents ears. Duende will be putting out another CD soon too. We are overdue but the same situation applies where I have been out of space to work like I wanted to. Finally, my work continues in pre-production to my follow up CD as a solo artist. Rob Pastore and Dan DeGregory will be the rhythm section for this release and we have a practice scheduled fro next week in St. Pete. I have been fine tuning tempos for the songs and thinking more about production ideas. I also have some ideas in the work for snippets of music that may be placed between tracks to give this release a soundtrack type vibe that helps move the story of the songs along. I am kind of sketching out some of those ideas here at home right now and getting excited about tracking in studio. I will keep you all posted on how that is going and with the video set up I am doing I plan to add photos and possible video to the gallery section of the web site. You can see pictures from my first session with Rob here - http://www.deanjohanesen.com/band/home.gallery.htm?galleryId=1063 For other photos from live shows, prize wheel winners, tours etc. visit the following to see all the photo galleries - http://www.deanjohanesen.com/band/list.gallery.htm SIGNING OFF Well that will do it for this week. I hope to see you soon and if not this weekend I will be in touch on the early side about where I will be next week. St. Pete, Siesta Key, Lakeland, Clearwater are all on the map of shows coming up. Howdy folks and Happy Thursday to you. A bit late with this weeks email but I wanted to get in touch before the weekend and let you all know what I have coming up. First things first… THANK YOU To The Venues - The only show I would up having last week was a last minute fill spot at the SRQ Farmers Market. As hot as it was, it was great to get out there for a solo spot as most of my gigs there now are with the duo I am in Duende. We play the 1st Saturday of every month out there if you want to hear us some time soon. To The Artists - I did not get a chance to play with anyone this past week, but I want to thank a few local artists that stopped to see me at the Market, or exchanged CD’s with me recently. Thanks to Scott Curts for stopping by with Apollo at the Market. Scott is a killer singer/songwriter guitar player from SRQ. Check him out some time. Thanks to Michael Miller and Laura for swinging by and congratulations to Michael on his new CD with The Heart Machine. I finally had a chance to sit down and give it an uninterrupted spin. Great job man, really enjoyed it. Speaking of CD’s by other locals who have been kind enough to advance or trade me copies, I had a chance to hear Martin Jordan and Andres Colin’s new releases and I enjoyed both of those very much as well. All 3 of these CD’s have had a single spin from top to bottom. I pln on giving them all some more time to dig in a bit more. Again, congratulations and thank you all for sharing your music with me. To you - As always, I thank you all for staying in touch online and beyond. I have never considered myself as having fans, but more a family of friends that support me and the music. Thank you all for that very much. THIS WEEK Here is where I will be this weekend: Thurs. June 26th - Darwin's on 4th @ 7:00 PM - Sarasota, FL Fri. Hello friends! I hope everyone is having a great week this week. I am a touch late with this weeks email and my schedule is probably the slowest it has been in quite some time. I had one show this week that wound up being rained out and I was supposed to be in Chicago for a festival but things did not line up just right so I decided to wait till next year for that festival. More to come on what is happening outside of the gigs, but first… THANK YOU To The Venues - Darwin’s on 4th, Southern Brewing and Wine Making and to the Among Friends House Concert hosts Becky and Tom. To The Artists - This past week was mostly filled with solo shows. I did get a great Fathers Day present last Sunday and have been listening to some records I have been wanting to hear for a while now. (thank you Said and Penny, I love you guys :) Thanks to these artists and their vinyl tracks / records for inspiring me this week: *Django Reinhardt - Love Letters and The Japanese Sandman (A and B side) *Miles Davis - Sketches of Spain *Joe Pass - Quadrant (w/Milt Jackson, Ray Brown & Mickey Roker) *Stephane Grapelli & David Grisman LIVE - (w/ Mike Marshall Mark O’Connor & Rob Wasserman) * Les Paul & Mary Ford - Tiger Rag / It’s a Lonesome Old Town & The World is Waiting for the Sunrise / Whispering To you - Special thanks to everyone that made it to the Among Friends House Concert this past week and to Becky and Tom for having me. I really enjoyed the evening and meeting everyone there. Thanks also the folks that made it to Darwin’s and Southern Brewing last week. My thanks goes out to Joe B for letting me stop in and play a few tunes at Pastry Art on Wednesday after my show was rained out that night. THIS WEEK - Record rehearsal and Photos No shows this week but I did start rehearsing for the next record this past Monday evening. Rob Pastore will be lending his talents on the next release on the upright bass. I took some video of our rehearsal and edited some of the footage for still shots which you can see here - http://www.deanjohanesen.com/band/home.gallery.htm?galleryId=1063 I plan to document as much of the process with video and pictures for this record as I can. I will be sharing that all with you on the web site in the gallery section, on Facebook or through the Reverbnation page. MINI TOUR - GA bound - FESTIVALS
This week I am hitting the road for a short run to GA and back. I was asked to play the Decatur Arts Festival in Decatur GA a month or so ago and decided to book some shows on the road up that way and back.
I am really honored to have been invited to the Decatur Arts Festival this year. More often than not I am sending out emails and submissions to apply in hopes of being accepted to these type of events, so to be invited out of the blue is something I sincerely appreciate.
I also found out this week that I will be returning to the Smoky Mountains Songwriters Festival in August from the 21st - 24th. I am not sure if this will lead to a full on tour as I may just enjoy the long weekend in this beautiful spot.
If all goes well with my re-submission, I may return to Mississippi in September for the MS Songwriter Festival again this year. If so that may become more of a regional tour in support of that event.
am basing a lot of my touring right now on these festivals to have something bigger to promote than just hitting the road to play some shows. I also learn a lot and get a certain amount of inspiration from working with other songwriters at these festivals. I have met some wonderful friends in the process. Many of them have helped me on the road with sharing information on where to try and book shows or offering places to stay.
Traveling seems to also be a source of inspiration for me. I hope this run coming up will offer me some time to work on and think about some of the songs I have been trying to complete and get out to you all.
Anyway, I am looking forward to this little tour coming up and I hope to see some of my friends from the N. FL & GA area this coming weekend and into next week.
Tampa folks, please mark your calendars for the Skipper’s Smokehouse show with 6 Volt Rodeo on the 30th. Advance tickets are available at http://skipperssmokehouse.tix.musictoday.com/basket.aspx?Action=AddTickets&eventId=161577
That will do it for this week. Thank you all for keeping in touch, making it out to the shows and helping me spread the word about the shows I sincerely appreciate you all.
Much love Dean

Hello and Happy Ocho De Mayo!!
A little late with this weeks email but I wanted to send this out before the weekend and let you know where I will be performing.
A quick note of thanks before the show info…
To The Venues -.1933 Pub and Grill, Southern Brewing and Wine Making and the Cottage
To The Artists - I have had a lot of solo shows this week so I have not had the chance to play with or listen to anyone during my shows.
I did see a great short interview with Jason Isbell that was inspiring and I have been listening to Isbell, Pokey Lafarge, Jesse Cook, Django & Gaucho.
I saw a quote by Tom Waits that struck me, it was “I like beautiful melodies telling me terrible things.” I also picked up my book Empire of The Summer Moon again and have been working at getting back on the reading schedule. That always seems to help get me writing again.
Thanks to all of these folks for inspiring me this week.
To you - I am always thankful that you all continue to stay in touch and make it out to see me. I appreciate that new folks are added to the family of friends as I am out sharing these songs and stories from town to town, city to city and state to state.
I know every week I take the time to try and share my thanks with you all and I mean it most sincerely. Thank you!!
THIS WEEK Fri May 9 - Tony’s Studio B @ 8:00 PM - Lakeland, FL Sat May 10 - Polo Grill and Bar @ 6:00 PM - Lakewood Ranch, FL Mon May 12 - The Hub Baja Grill @ 12:00 PM - Siesta Key, Florida Wed May 14 - New World Brewery @ 7:00 PM - Tampa, FL
A quick note about the next recording: I am working on putting together a rhythm section to start tracking in late June / July.
Rehearsals will start some time in May to get the songs for this next record down with the rhythm section.
From there I will be able to send out tracks to featured instruments / artists to add their magic to the songs.
I will be recording with a band for this next release to realize the sound of these songs I have in mind for the next release. I will keep you posted on the progress as things start coming together. It always seems to take longer than you want it to but I will do my best to get to work with the folks who will be helping me out and have something new from the studio out to you as soon as I can.
That will do it for this week. I hope to see you in Lakeland Friday or in Lakewood Ranch Saturday. Polo Grill this weekend may be my last time there till after the summer so it would be great to see you there if you can make it.
Much love and thanks for your support - Dean www.deanjohanesen.com

FAMILY / EASTER
We rounded out our weekend with a big family gathering at my Moms for Easter and had a great time watching all the kids run around playing games, finding and hiding eggs, having water fights, dancing etc.
My “family” has always been extended to anyone around us. After the three of my siblings were a bit older, my Mom took in foster kids, she has adopted in the past and has done so recently too.
I had my issues with other younger beings in “my home” in my teens, but learned a lot about other people and their struggles and circumstances from this experience.
My patience to behavior from some of the children we took in was at times non-existent. That was, until, my Mom could explain their history or upbringing and I would start to try and think of how I would behave after going through some of the same things they had to endure.
After having a child I started to understand more of those feelings and I have come to view children from the eyes of a Dad or a parent in some way.
Not to sound weird, lol, but I feel my mind set changed quite a bit after having my son. I started thinking about how I would want people to treat my child and kind of adopted that mentality in how I interact.
The experience of having adopted siblings and foster brothers and sisters has also had an effect on me and the rest of my family in that we seem to see everyone as part of our family or the ever extending family.
Brothers and sisters from other mothers and misters. Lol.
Anyway, I enjoyed this Sunday very much with family and “extended family” and felt thankful to my Mom for teaching us that family goes way beyond who you were born to and where you are in the world.
That will do it for this week. I thank you all for being part of my extended family too, and I look forward to the next time I see you.
