Fifteen Reasons Our Churches Are Less Evangelistic Today

By almost any metric, the churches in our nation are much less evangelistic today than they were in the recent past. In my own denomination, we are reaching non-Christians only half as effectively as we were 50 years ago (we measure membership to annual baptisms). The trend is disturbing. We certainly see the pattern in the early church where “every day the Lord added to them those who were being saved” (Acts 2:47). In too many of our churches today, the congregations are reaching no one for Christ in the course of an entire year. The Poll I conducted an unscientific Twitter poll recently to see what church leaders and church members thought of this trend, My specific question was: “Why do you think many churches aren’t as evangelistic as they once were?” The responses arrived quickly and in great numbers, both in public tweets and in direct messages to me. Indeed, I was still receiving responses four days after I sent my Twitter question. The Results The response was highly informative for me. Here are the top fifteen responses listed in order of frequency: 1.Christians have no sense of urgency to reach lost people. 2.Many Christians and church members do not befriend and spend time with lost persons. 3.Many Christians and church members are lazy and apathetic. 4.We are more known for what we are against than what we are for. 5.Our churches have an ineffective evangelistic strategy of “you come” rather than “we go.” 6.Many church members think that evangelism is the role of the pastor and paid staff. 7.Church membership today is more about getting my needs met rather than reaching the lost. 8.Church members are in a retreat mode as culture becomes more worldly and unbiblical. 9.Many church members don’t really believe that Christ is the only way of salvation. 10.Our churches are no longer houses of prayer equipped to reach the lost. 11.Churches have lost their focus on making disciples who will thus be equipped and motivated to reach the lost. 12.Christians do not want to share the truth of the gospel for fear they will offend others. Political correctness is too commonplace even among Christians. 13.Most churches have unregenerate members who have not received Christ themselves. 14.Some churches have theological systems that do not encourage evangelism. 15.Our churches have too many activities; they are too busy to do the things that really matter. So What Is the Solution? I received hundreds of responses to this poll. There is obviously widespread concern about the lack of evangelism in our churches and among Christians. First, let me hear what you think of these responses. Second, and more importantly, offer some solutions to the challenges. Make certain those solutions include what you can do as much as what they should do. I look forward to hearing from you.

How Operating Outside of Your Calling Harms Everyone

Serving outside of our calling will have adverse effects on us, our family and everyone else within our ministry. One day, Moses received a visit from Jethro, his father-in-law. We don’t really know, but maybe Moses’ wife complained to her dad about how much time Moses spent doing “God stuff” and how little time he spent at home. Like many other busy ministry professionals, perhaps Moses was too exhausted when he arrived home to carry on an intelligent conversation with her. In any case, Jethro vocalized his concern about how exhausted Moses appeared: What you are doing is not good. You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone. . . . Select capable men from all the people—men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain—and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. Have them serve as judges for the people at all times, but have them bring every difficult case to you; the simple cases they can decide themselves. That will make your load lighter, because they will share it with you. If you do this and God so commands, you will be able to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied. (Exodus 18:17-23) Like Moses, we can’t do it alone. We’ll wear ourselves out, and our people will become exhausted too. Our ministry isn’t receiving our best if we’re spending time working in areas we aren’t suited for. We can get others involved in the process by teaching them how to do things. We can then take on the duties only we are equipped to do and let others handle the rest. Those serving in small ministry settings (especially the single-staffed variety) have to work as generalists and don’t have the luxury of specialization. In such cases, lay leadership can and should be developed to fill roles and duties that don’t line up with our areas of giftedness. If we’re not good at numbers and accounting, we might find a volunteer to keep the books or hire a specialized person from a temp agency for a few hours per month. If the only mouse we’re familiar with lives in a hole in the wall, we might search for a layperson to manage the ministry’s website. It’s not wise to try to do it all by ourselves. Instead, we can pray for God to bring others along to help us and stop feeling guilty for asking others for help. Working too far outside our calling often leads to potential disaster—both for us and everyone else in our ministry. As emotional trials set in, we will begin resenting our work, our coworkers and our volunteers, eventually leading to frustration, exhaustion and burnout. We may even become self-absorbed and seek relief by entertaining any number of destructive behaviors. It’s not worth it.

Look into YOU

There are two great reasons why it can be good to make new years resolutions. First, it forces us to look at ourselves. To be honest about our failures and our need to change. The exercise of examining ourselves , with Gods help, and seeing where we fall short is important. Second, making a list of resolutions can turn us to God. If we are honest, we know we fall short of what we ought to be, and because of that, we need Gods forgiveness. We’ll also realize that we can’t live the way we should in our own strength. We need Gods help. Don’t live life in vain moving in the wrong direction. Examine yourself with a humble heart today. See where you stand. Haggai 1:5 Now therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts; Consider your ways. 2 Corinthians 13:5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? Numbers 32:23 and be sure your sin will find you out. Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. John 3:16-18 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Starving for Life

You can't force your way to heaven but think of it like this, if your family was starving to death and been out of food for days, and someone told you how to get inside of a warehouse full of food. You would spare nothing in the urgency of getting to the way in. We would not be searching for another way !!! We would go with what we have been told. Out of pure desperation and need we would violently choose to go. Until we realize we are dead we will never seek life. If you haven't realized your lack you'll never see Christ's worth. Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. (Matthew 11:11-12 KJV)

End of The Law

There is a truth in the Gospel that the devil doesn't want you to know, Its so scandelous many religious men don't believe it to be true. Its the Almost to good to be true Gospel. Its the breaking of the chains of bondage. (Romans 10:4) For Christ is the "END OF THE LAW" for righteousness to "EVERYONE" that believeth. But we do seek to live out the law because it is profitable to the Kingdom, and our lives (Romans 3:31) Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law. So what are these Laws I'm refering to : (Matthew 22:36-40) Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt "LOVE" the Lord thy "GOD" with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt "LOVE THY NEIGHBOR" as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. "ALL THE LAW" Wow thats pretty simple isnt it.Get these 2 down and you will be living the Law.Focus on Christ and the "Law" will work itself out. Turn your eyes on Jesus and stop picking up the chains that he shed his precious blood to free you from. 1 John 2:10 He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.

Look Up

Psalm 40:12 For innumerable evils have compassed me about: mine iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of mine head: therefore my heart faileth me. We get so focused on our fears and what goes on around us we lose focus on the One with all the answers, the One who created us and all we see, the One who we were created to follow. Men walk aimless through this life looking for all the answers but fail to do the simplest thing in the universe, LOOK UP, to the heavens. There are so many times that I can tell you to focus on this or that or work harder to do this or that, sometimes we need to find that quiet place, and connect to God by realizing once again, or maybe for the first time that He is God, and HE is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him(Heb 11:6). Not in words only but in heart. Look up to heaven today and pour yourself out to God. Only then will you begin to find the Peace you need to carry on. Looking around will never bring the healng,Peace, answers, it only causes more anxiety. Claim the Peace that God has for you today, Look Up…. Mark 8:23 And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw ought. 24 And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees, walking. 25 After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and MADE HIM LOOK UP: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly Psalm 121 I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. 2 My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth. 3 He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Psalm 111:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever. Diligent : having or showing care and conscientiousness in one's work or duties

So a fool returneth to his folly

Once you come to the heart knowledge of the saving power of Jesus Christ, If you choose to fall away you will fall harder and faster and deeper and will be harder to come out of it . the Outcome on earth will be far worse than before. Scripture says it would have been better for you on earth to have never heard the Gospel. You are as a Fool and useless to Gods work. You can not promise God something and then take it back. What if God took his promise back. He will not protect you from the consequinces of foolish choices, he gave you free will, your choice how you live and die. Choose Gods way its better for us all ! 2 Peter 2:20 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. 21 For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. 22 But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire. Proverbs 26:11 As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly. Ecclesiastes 5:4 When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed.5 Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.

Door stopper or door breacher, which testimony do you have ?

Just because the Bible doesn't specifically say not to do a certain thing does not make it right in the eyes of God....consider this in all you do. Everything you do should glorify God (1 Cor 10:31) Your Testimony is the only thing that lets your light shine. If your Terstimony is tainted with stumbling blocks no-one wants to hear what you got to say. Revelations says by the Blood of Jesus and our Testimony you will overcome the devils snares, not just for yourself but for others. A good testimony opens doors for you, and even your enemies are at peace with you, but A tainted testimony slams doors for God while you feed your selfish flesh the things you want to do. God sees your heart and mind (Jeremiah 17:10) and gives you what they desire. If you want the Lord to open Doors then remove the doorstop(stumbling block) so he can. Because you are the one that put it there. If you say I have no power to do so, ask God to help ,and really mean it. Only Then Can it Happen, your free will is Gods only limitation….Stop saying I can’t and do it. If there is no fear of God at this point, You believe nothing and should Consider Evaluating your Salvation ! Testimony : Story of your daily walk whether as Christian or unbeliever Expedient : Convenient and practical, although possibly improper or immoral. Edify : Instruct or improve (someone) morally or intellectually Stumbling Block : An obstacle or impediment. an obstruction that stands in the way (and must be removed or surmounted or circumvented) Proverbs 16:7 When a man's ways please the LORD, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him. 1 Corinthians 10:23- All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient(convenient): all things are lawful for me, but all things edify(instruct or improve) not. 1 John 2:10-He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. 1 Corinthians 8:9- But take heed lest by any means this liberty of your's become a stumblingblock to them that are weak leviticus 19:14 Thou shalt not curse the deaf, nor put a stumbling block before the blind, but shalt fear thy God: I am the Lord. Romans 14:13-Let us not therefore judge one another anymore: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumbling block or an occasion to fall in his brother's way. Jeremiah 17:10 I the LORD search the heart, I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings. Revelation 12:10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. 11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. 1 john 1:1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; 2 (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) 3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.

Evil is the absence of Good

The professor of a university challenged his students with this question. "Did God create everything that exists?" A student answered bravely, "Yes, he did". The professor then asked, "If God created everything, then he created evil. Since evil exists (as noticed by our own actions), so God is evil. The student couldn't respond to that statement causing the professor to conclude that he had "proved" that "belief in God" was a fairy tale, and therefore worthless. Another student raised his hand and asked the professor, "May I pose a question? " "Of course" answered the professor. The young student stood up and asked : "Professor does Cold exists?" The professor answered, "What kind of question is that? ...Of course the cold exists... haven't you ever been cold?" The young student answered, "In fact sir, Cold does not exist. According to the laws of Physics, what we consider cold, in fact is the absence of heat. Anything is able to be studied as long as it transmits energy (heat). Absolute Zero is the total absence of heat, but cold does not exist. What we have done is create a term to describe how we feel if we don't have body heat or we are not hot." "And, does Dark exist?", he continued. The professor answered "Of course". This time the student responded, "Again you're wrong, Sir. Darkness does not exist either. Darkness is in fact simply the absence of light. Light can be studied, darkness can not. Darkness cannot be broken down. A simple ray of light tears the darkness and illuminates the surface where the light beam finishes. Dark is a term that we humans have created to describe what happens when there's lack of light." Finally, the student asked the professor, "Sir, does evil exist?" The professor replied, "Of course it exists, as I mentioned at the beginning, we see violations, crimes and violence anywhere in the world, and those things are evil." The student responded, "Sir, Evil does not exist. Just as in the previous cases, Evil is a term which man has created to describe the result of the absence of God's presence in the hearts of man." After this, the professor bowed down his head, and didn't answer back. You can Look around the room and count the light bulbs or see which direction the sun comes from, but none of you can count the source of darkness ! Jesus was placed in a dark world to be the light of the world, but men loved darkness rather than light John 3:19.
