December 2015

End of 2015 already! TINGLY is really beginning to seriously rock- looking forward to club dates and some festivals in 2016. The PPH will be ending the year with two big concerts (12/29 & 30) at The Rio Theatre in Santa Cruz playing with: White Album Ensemble (music of The Beatles) and The Beggar Kings.(music of The Rolling Stones).

Will try to post more often ......... hopefully!

Playing with TINGLY

Hi, everyone. Long time- no post. The PPH have been busy with various projects, most notably with ska punk band TINGLY. We've spent the last 3 months learning 2 cd's worth of original tunes written by crazed frontman MIKE MATTINGLY.

TINGLY is made up of some of the best ska musicians from San Jose and Santa Cruz who have played for pioneering ska bands: Square Roots; Skankin' Pickle; The Brownies; The Mad Maggies and more.

MIKE MATTINGLY is the ringleader and brings stage cred to this project. Mike's past: cofounder of Skankin' Pickle; founder of Neosoreskin- opened for The Foo Fighters, No Doubt, Beck, etc. Mike has created many cd's with his various bands and now, Tingly, has 2 cd's which we are performing live.

Just played our first live gig this past Saturday on Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz as a benefit for the Surfrider Foundation. All maps and PA were run by solar power. So, now were ready to hit the clubs.

More info as we start booking gigs in local clubs. Look for Tingly.......

p.s. I'll post the story behind the name TINGLY very soon.

Summer Almost Over?

Looks like I'm lagging in keeping this site up to date. Saturday 8/20/15, the PPH played a killer show with The Beggar Kings, playing note-for-note 2 LPS by The Rolling Stones: "Exile on Main Street"; "Sticky Fingers'. It went off well even though Santa Cruz hit an all time high temperature for the century of 101F! and the Rio theatre did not have AC. A couple audience vids from the show: I’ve Got the Blues https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uRmU1nkpxA&feature=youtu.be

Moonllight Mile https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=beeUXwifDfw&app=desktop ******************* PPH is also in rehearsals with a new ska-punk band from the Santa Clara Valley: "Tingly". Almost up and running and gig worthy. "Tingly" is the brainchild of "Skankin' Pickle" cofounder Mike Mattingly. Talk about wild 'n crazy..... you'll definitely want to catch this band live.

Jazz-Rock *** Ska-Punk

Feeling stoked that we are getting numerous calls for gigs from a variety of sources---James Durbin's Destroy the Night #2; a recording gig for a country song; a 4 song EP for a well-known producer/musician (hush-hush); a project playing the music of The Rolling Stones (more info later....); a r&b/funk fundraiser; an acoustic gig in the telescope dome at Lick Observatory this summer. Yep.... we're stoked.

2 New Tunes

Hi. I converted a couple songs to mp3 format so I could post here. The PPH played with Naomi and the Courteous Rude Boys on Crazy by Now and all the way back to the beginning with Square Roots, playing on Program Zero. The vocal was a scratch track/place holder until lyrics could be written but we decided to stay with Billy's stream-of-craziness lyrics.

In the Studio

The PPH are a sought after horn section for recording work. We were in a session last Friday at Real to Reel Studios in Sand City, CA. Mucho, big time fun!!! Can't wait to go back and record on 1" tape!!

Gigs Booking for 2015

We're stoked to report that shows area starting to really book up. Things kick off next Friday (the 13th) with a big, get-down Mardi Gras bash at Doc's Lab in San Francisco when we play with the East Bay Brass Band. Also on the horizon are recording projects in Monterey, several gigs with r&b bands, a Rolling Stones review and "Destroy the Night #2" with American Idol finalist James Durbin. We're pretty stoked, to say the least. Let's keep swinging.

PPH: the First Generation

Now, here is something fun. Just found this vid a couple months ago- my old band, Square Roots, didn't know it even existed! The late, great Bill Graham wanted to raise funds and awareness for the victims of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake so he staged a concert. In fact, it was a big televised event ( 1.5 million viewers), with 3 concert going on at the same time: the Watsonville site; the Cow Palace in SF; Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center in Oakland. The PLEASURE POINT HORNS were created as the horn section for Square Roots and this is a great example of those first days. Sound is a little wonky.... we were the first act of the day (opening for LOS LOBOS and SANTANA) so we were the the 'live' sound check monkeys.... as you'll see, the tech crew used us to get used to mic placement, levels and also camera angles. But, nevertheless, its nice to have documentation of those early days. Enjoy!

Beatles Horns

I wanted to let folks know that the PPh played 3 dynamite shows with the WHITE ALBUM ENSEMBLE, a talented group of musicians who were drawn together by their love of the music of The Beatles. These cats recreate albums note-for-note. The high level of musicianship makes these shows quite breathe taking. We did a 3 show run- Dec 27,28 & 29, 2014 and, man, was it some big time fun! Definitely check them out livealbumlive.com

2014 Wrap Up

Hello, kids. 2014 was a defining year for John & I and the PLEASURE POINT HORNS. We had been playing on a lot of different gigs & with a wide range of bands. We came to the conclusion a couple years ago that we are at our strongest as a 2-person brass horn section. So we went full-speed-ahead with the PPH concept during 2014. We had a stellar year performing with a wide range of wonderfully creative artists and outstanding music. We backed up American Idol finalist JAMES DURBIN playing a show that featured a set of music by The Doors and a set by Led Zeppelin to a large, sold-out theatre. The PPH was also picked up By the WHITE ALBUM ENSEMBLE to cover the horn parts as the WAE covers, note-for-note, the music of The Beatles....... which is really, really fun. It allows John & I to bring all the toys that are needed to cover the Beatles' tunes sonically: Bb trumpets; C trumpets; Bb cornet; A piccolo trumpet (Penny Lane!); flugelhorns; slide trombone; valve trombone; tuba. The PPH also had a blast during the summer, recording a ska punk EP with "Flip & the European Mutts". We also played a series of shows to support the release, including 2 gigs at the iconic punk venue, 924 Gilman Street. We ended 2014 with several recording jobs which included soundtrack for an educational video and 3 performance with the WAE at the very end of December. So, we're very stoked to announce that 2015 is already starting to book up! We've been doing a few big band gigs already and have 2, full cd recording projects lined up. Will be working with my old college room mate and surfing buddy, Grammy Award-winner KEN EMERSON on our own cd. Plus. we'll be on another cd with a name artist - but we can't announce that.....yet! I will try and add additional samples (have to convert files to mp3's) so that you can have a feel for the depth of what the PPH does. Here is hoping that your 2015 will be the high water mark of your career. See you in the studio! =Dan
