DOA and other cool things

I am nervous because I just found out that I will be doing a songwriters circle with the legendary Joey Shithead of punk band DOA in Ottawa on April 30. I attended countless shows of theirs spending hours applying eyeliner and painting our tshirts with Talk - Action = Zero. One of the most inspirational concerts I saw was in Stanley Park with DOA, Arlo Guthrie and Pete Seeger. Absolute Protest Perfection. The question is....is it totally counter the punk ethic to ask him to sign my vinyl copy of Bloodied but Unbowed?

New Oh Susanna App now for iPhone and Android.

Hey y'all! I shelled out the dough to be in the modern age. All you iphoners and androids can download a free Oh Susanna app. You can stream some tunes, see some videos and a list of gigs (including a map!). Really I got this so that my hubby could fiddle more with his iPhone but somehow we would be interacting even if just in virtual way. Just kidding - he is actually the best husband ever but I heed the advice of the blues lady that said, "Don't advertise your man." So instead I will advertise my app.

Chords for Soon the Birds and Greyhound Bus

A lovely lady named Joanne asked me how to play Greyhound Bus and Soon the Birds so here goes. I am not a trained musician so I am kind of a dolt when it comes to theory and keys. But here is how I play Greyhound Bus. Capo the guitar on the second fret. Verses: G Bm C G D Am F C D G Bm C G D Am F C D Chorus (When I was seventeen part): Am C G F C Am C G F D Last Verse is a little different cause it hangs on the F on “beats inside of me”: G Bm C G D Am F F F G Bm C G D Am F C D G

Soon the Birds: Capo on 7th fret Verse: C F C Am F C C F C Am F C

Chorus: F G C F Dm F C Am F G

I hope this makes some sense! Thanks for Reading.

Making Split Pea Soup

Don't be fooled by split peas. They are sneaky little buggers. You think they are demure and petite and then they expand into a blob and overflow all over your stove.

Salmon Cakes Recipe (stolen from a legitimate cookbook)

Hi guys, for all 2 of you who have downloaded this app (aside from my mom and dad) and who wanted some recipes (my mom already has it) here are some yummy salmon cakes to make:

mix together: 2 large potatoes cooked and mashed 3 green onions sliced 1/4 cup of coriander or parsley chopped 1 tsp pf mustard 1/2 tsp of lemon rind (no white pith - it is bitter) a pinch of salt and pepper 1/4 tsp of hot sauce or chipotle 1 or 2 eggs beaten 2 cans of salmon (wild salmon is better for the earth)

and make into patties 2 cm thick

dredge in panko which is this incredible japanese breadcumb substance or you can use regular breadcrumbs or nothing

fry in veg oil until browned on both sides (about 5 minutes)

aioli sauce (super yummy!!!) whisk together 1/2 cup of mayo 1 glove of chopped garlic 1 tsp of extra virgin olive oil 1 tsp of lemon juice 1 tsp (or more) of minced dill pickle 1 tsp (or more) of minced red pepper 1/4 tsp of salt

this is a great thing to serve with an arugula salad or fennel salad and good for dates because it is succulent but not too messy. my mom always said,"never eat spaghetti on a date because it could dribble all over your chin" and that can only be good if your date wants to lick it off for you. (see - i was also asked to say something naughty)

Soon The Birds

In a career spanning just over a decade, Oh Susanna has released five critically acclaimed records noted for their contemplative, thoughtful, folk-inspired songs that transport listeners into an imaginary emotional landscape. Whether applauding a young woman’s need to stand tall in the face of dire circumstances, expressing love and tenderness to a dying loved one or embodying the anger of a soldier’s widow, Oh Susanna’s songs aim straight for the gut. The timeless themes of love, loss and longing are expressed in soaring melodies and vivid lyrics. These songs beg careful listening.
