The Uncle Devin Show® / Blog

Vents Magazine Interview - June 29, 2013

Who’s The Uncle Devin Show? How you got started in the music scene?

The Uncle Devin Show, LLC is a live, musical experience for children and families by renowned drummer and percussionist Devin Walker. The show cultivates the minds of children through percussion instruments and is a dynamic cross between Fat Albert and Schoolhouse Rock.

I am both a drummer and percussionist, and, therefore, is known as the original “Drumcussionist.”” My drum set consists of a combination of real drums/ percussion instruments, and the latest in electronic drums. This hybrid drum set allows me to play the normal drum groove while also playing different percussion instruments simultaneously. I also use an assortment of percussion instruments, including cowbells, triangles, shakers, congas and timbales, as learning tools in his message.

The Uncle Devin Show, LLC was started as a result of me being an active part in the lives of my nephews and niece. I would spend countless hours entertaining them, using my drums and percussion as learning tools to drive home important life principles. As they became older, I began recording these lessons so they will always have them. When I was the Youth Director at my local church, I shared my music with my youth group and with the children of some of his friends. They all loved it. I then began to perform live shows at different venues. Thus, The Uncle Devin Show was born.

What are you looking to spread with your music?

The mission of The Uncle Devin Show, LLC is twofold:

1. Product Mission – To provide a high quality, live musical entertainment experience for children through the drum, both traditional and electronic, to convey universal principles of love to children and to aspire young people into pursuing the artist within them. 2. Social Mission – To help raise the awareness and advocacy among, children and their parents, guardians and caregivers about the movement for more public funds for music in schools.

The U.S. Congress has proposed drastic spending cuts in all Arts in Education programming. This is unfortunate because music provides students with the opportunity to express creativity and to develop skills that will benefit them throughout the rest of their lives. Additionally, too many of today’s children are negatively influence by artists who talk exclusively about sex, violence and material gain through popular music, becoming negative role models for today’s generation.

The Uncle Devin Show, LLC seeks to fill this void by providing positive, uplifting and fun music designed specifically for children five years old and up, while also providing them a positive role model in which to follow. Very few artists today dedicate their craft toward the elevation and education of today’s children. Therefore, The Uncle Devin Show recognizes this need as an excellent opportunity to combine music, education and advocacy in a way that is entertaining, socially responsible and financially feasible.
