'Marianne' Video just released + Divan Show this Friday w/Lily Frost

Wow, dudes - it's been such a long time since you've heard from me, but I come in peace and with lots of good news:

'Marianne' video released RIGHT NOW on YouTube!! Filmed on March 18th in the basement of a church in West Montreal, this very first music video of mine features me and my amazing band playing one of my favourite songs from True Story Orchestra. Much time and stress and gasoline was invested in finding a venue that perfectly fit the vision and concept I had in my head: a rehearsal for a small-town local talent show. I really lucked out with this set - check out the ornate detailing on the 100-year old piano, and the old-fashioned checkered floor and vintage church pews lent that extra somethin' special. It took a team of 15 absolutely amazing and patient volunteers four hours to transform what is normally a garderie for pre-schoolers into what you see in this video - and it took us 15 minutes to tear everything down and get the heck outta there to avoid having to pay for extra rental time! On top of crafting by hand each one of the 60+ silver stars you see hanging from the ceiling, nevermind running around trying to find red velvet theatre curtains and a working gramophone that didn't cost an arm and a leg, forget the hours spent untangling old Christmas lights to see which ones actually worked....we had a blast throughout the entire process. Special thanks go to my band for agreeing to play nothing but Marianne for three rehearsals straight and for being so patient while we did take after take after take after take after... This video was shot with a Canon 5D Mark 2 camera by Daegan McNeaney (my lil' bro!) and Alex Hofmann of Fresca Films, and props go to them for putting up with my bossiness and letting me have my own way (90% of the time). Enjoy! And please share it with your friends.

Biggest show yet at Divan Orange this Friday!! It's true - I'm so happy to be invited by local concert promoter Indie Montreal to open up for one of my favourite Toronto songstresses, Lily Frost, as part of this year's Montreal Fringe Festival! This is a really important show for us, and I have heard from Jon at IM that it might sell out (nope, that's not a marketing ploy!). Me and the band will be doin' our thing to kick off the night right at 9pm, so it'd be even more awesome if a good portion of those ticket sales were from our friends and fans - I have some personally set aside, so you can certainly message me and let me know if you want a pair (or six) put aside for you at the door. Alternately, you can buy tickets online on the official Fringe website. Motel Raphael rounds out the night, three very lovely chanteuses, so please come check them out, too!

More news to come very soon, including: - Two more music videos: * 'The Night (Encounters)' - shot on March 17th in the freezing cold at - you guessed it! - night on the side of Mont Royal.... * 'Closer' - animated by Régis Konan - A brand-spanking-new web site - Summer tour to Halifax, Québec City, Charlottetown, Mount Vernon (PEI), Woodstock (NB), Sackville (NB), Toronto, Hamilton and more!

HUGE SHOW @ CABARET DU MILE END - WED, NOVEMBER 23rd!!

Visit http://www.ainsleymcneaney.bandcamp.com for advance tickets today 'cause this one's gonna sell the f*@k out!!

Happy fall….what’s new? Carving pumpkins, big vats of chili, a little too much red wine with good friends. Snow is coming and so is Christmas…man, I love this time of year. It’s always a scramble, though, to get everything done that I have been putting off all year! Taking French classes every weekday for 4 1/2 hours doesn’t help my productivity, but I’ll say this proudly: that I never want to be one of those Anglophones living in Montreal who doesn’t know how to speak French. Already I have improved immensely (but that also could just be my Québécois friends being nice). Any non-French-speaker in Québec has experienced going into a store and trying so hard to speak French, only to be spoken back in English by the salesperson. I’ll let you in on the trick I’ve learned – whenever that happens to me, I always, always speak back in French, explaining, ‘Merci, mais j’apprend maintenant le français et je dois pratiquer!’ So many times I’ve left the store with that individual thanking me profusely and telling me how much they appreciate it (seemingly on behalf of the entire Québécois population), which makes me wonder how many people are there out there refusing to speak, to learn, even to try…

In any case! On to the big news: I am thrilled to have been asked to open for Jon Davis at the Cabaret de Mile End on Wednesday, November 23rd – and the operative word is indeed ‘thrilled’ as Cabaret de Mile End is an awesome venue and I’m tired of playing small rooms with bad sound systems where no one can hear my lyrics (sorry to bitch, but any musician playing out there regularly will know what I’m talking about!). Jon’s manager, Deborah Baum, is promoting the event, and it’s going to be huge. The talented world-pop-dance band Mangomango will be rounding out the evening, getting your booties shaking and such. So. Get your ticket today! Seriously, visit my Bandcamp site to purchase a ticket online in advance, because I’m honestly not sure how many there will be left at the door! We’ll be on at 8pm SHARP, no later because then we might get the old cane ‘round the middle, ya know? I should also take a second to mention that although I’ve played a couple of shows with Jon before, this will be the first time I’ll be hearing him live with a full band – this excites me to no end! And, of course, my full band will be there – Amie, Pierre, Simon, Marie-Pier and Matt – come and tell us how hipster we are for playing at the Cabaret de Mile End! Visit http://www.ainsleymcneaney.bandcamp.com for advance tickets today!

And for those of you who prefer a weekend show – hell, for all of you! – THIS COMING FRIDAY we’ll be playing as part of Acoustic Nights 10 with the lovely and talented songstress Melina Soochan. Melina started the Acoustic Nights series awhile back and this will be the 10th installment – at the Jello Martini Lounge (I’ve never been there, but I hear it’s awesome – I’m assuming they have both jello and martinis, so I think that’s pretty much guaranteed if that’s the case…hehe…) featuring me and my band, Melina, Flo (reggae) and Jolie Alien Babes (cabaret/folk pop/rock-a-billy). Check out the event on Facebook, okay? It’s an early show staring at 7pm, so come even earlier for the 5 à 7 and stay afterward for the party! http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=273844369303155

Onwards and upwards, I once heard a slightly hunch-backed CEO wearing a custom-fitted suit say while riding an elevator…not bad advice, not bad at all. XO A=M

Kudos + Other Things

Happy July to you all! I feel like the summer is already flying by…many days/nights have been spent barbequing on the balcony, tending to my fragile garden, hiking on Mont Royal and playing music. Lots of plans in the works for the summer including many awesome shows, a music video (finally!), Ainsley McNeaney t-shirts and new songs coming your way.

I’ve been playing with some really awesome people who deserve a good mention here: - Amie Watson has been my right-hand-woman since last summer; she plays a mean glockenspiel and always knows in advance when I’m about to screw up my own lyrics. Amie is also an avid foodie – you can check out her blog right here (http://www.multiculturiosity.com/) for recipe ideas, funny food-related anecdotes and to learn about starting a worm box right in your own kitchen. - Pierre Haché I met in February through the wonderfully helpful saxophonist Dalhi Gonthier, and he has been such an awesome support ever since. Any singer songwriter can tell you that having a drummer who’s committed to your project is a rare thing indeed – to have one as talented as Pierre is just freaking icing on my musical cake. Definitely worth every drive out to NDG. - Simon Lévesque joined us when I was down sick with the flu and panicking about how the hell I was going to pull off an upcoming show without a bassist. Oh dear, how the music gods smiled upon me that day…aside from being an absolutely prolific player, he is ALWAYS there onstage, just behind me and to the left, to correct the many, many mistakes I make attempting to speak French in public. - Marie-Pier Houle (la belle flûtiste!) came to our first rehearsal thinking we were just jamming and stayed for the gig (no joke). This girl is not your run of the mill concert band flautist – she adds stuff to the parts I’ve written that I would have never thought of on my own: jazzy, freaky stuff that soars and growls and is just generally awesome.

There you have it! Next show is THIS WEDNESDAY at Burritoville with Robb Hill & Brave By Numbers, Mistress Funk and Glass Bridges. The show will start at 8pm (seriously) and for only $5 I promise that you will be entertained for at least four straight hours while you eat a burrito (which is, in itself, mildly entertaining).

Go Canada! XO A=M
