Courtesy of its zesty title cut, ‘In The Flow’ by smooth jazz flautist Althea Rene has already been making some waves. Now Trippin ‘N’ Rhythm has returned to this choice collection for yet another radio single, the dazzling ‘Sunday Cruise’. Of course regular readers of these pages will know that before becoming a full time musician Althea spent more than 10 years as a Wayne County Deputy Sheriff in Detroit, MI. With perhaps the exception of Cagney & Lacey, she is certainly my favorite ex-cop of all time and with ‘In The Flow’ is all set become the favorite of many more. Review by: Toi Elliott Althea Rene "In The Flow" Record Label: Trippin’ N Rythym Jazz flautist, Althea Rene, recently signed to the label of Trippin’ N Rythym drops her new cd entitled “In the Flow” May 28th. A Howard University Graduate, this 10 yr ex cop turned full time smooth jazz artist attributes her musical inspiration to her father, Dezie McCullers, one of the “Original Funk Brothers.”
Rene is top on my list of new, contemporary jazz artists and based on the sneak preview of this new cd, has definitely carved out her place in the music world. While the offspring of a talented musician, Rene has her own urban contemporary smooth jazz style. From the opening track “La Solstic” with its crescendo of upbeat, Latin infused sounds to the title track “In the Flow” Althea Rene lays it down with her sensual, soulful mastery of the flute.
One of my favorite tracks on the cd is “Sunday Cruise”, a laid back funky and easy groove spotlighting this young artist’s ability to lure in the listener and keep them wanting more. This is definitely a new release you don’t want to miss and one to add to your collection.
Althea Rene threw 'down in' Columbus, Ohio on Friday and performed another exciting show. We thank all of my Ohio State/Columbus 'homies' that spent the evening supporting live music by cheering her on. She hopes to visit Ohio again soon.
