Faith Dives Us... Metal Hammer & Kerrang! album reviews

Metal Hammer Issue 197 October 2009

PARADISE LOST FAITH DIVIDES US - DEATH UNITES US (Century Media)

Remarkably, this British institution has now reached a dozen albums within two decades, proving not only their longevity but their productivity. In fact, it's the band's regular release schedule that has allowed their every shift in style to be observed and documented, moving gradually from doom/death metal to gothic metal, to gothic rock and back again. While every album has been something of an evolution from the last, their 2005 self-titled effort was perhaps the most dramatic jump - a back-to-the-roots album that saw the band return to more metallic territories, something that has continued with 2007's In Requiem, as well as on this album. Keyboards are kept to a minimum and further electronics are notable by their absence, the guitar leads carry that gothic vibe of the early albums and Nick Holmes' vocals retain the aggression and gruffness lost in their 'Depeche Mode' period. If anything this is a drier, heavier listen than its predecessor, second track I Remain having a hint of 90s death metal in it's chugging guitars while Universal Dream harks back to the group's death/doom beginnings. It was the epic atmosphere - along with the riffs that lodged themselves in your subconscious - that made albums such as Icon and Draconian Times so essential, and this solid, resonant album lies within reach of Paradise Lost's glory days.

PARADISE LOST FAITH DIVIDES US - DEATH UNITES US (Century Media)

KKKK

Legendary Yorkshire doomsters deliver their best album in a decade

If any band's going to come up with such a chirpy title as that, it's Paradise Lost. Twenty-one years in the game, and the Halifax gloom metallers can still come up with new ways of presenting darkness to the world. As far as PL records go, Faith Divides Us... is a stripped down affair, relying on weight and grimness of the riffs and frontman Nick Holmes' cynical lyrics to bring the gloom, more than on keyboards. The result is an album steeped in a particular kind of darkness that only they can create. Not selfish, woe is me moaning, but that oh so English gloom that makes tracks like As Horizons End into a superbly haunting bit of bleak metal. And they're doing this stuff better than they have in a good decade. Hopefully that'll make them smile... Maybe.

Paradise Lost, 'Faith...' album review in Terrorizer Magazine

TERRORIZER MAGAZINE SEP. 2009 ISSUE 188 PARADISE LOST ‘Faith Divides Us – Death Unites Us’ The word, when confronting with fresh movements from the Yorkshire’s lords of sweeping gothic grandeur, is ‘dignity’. Even during the period that critics sneer at as their weakest, when they spiked their shortened hair, tossed their cravats into the River Ouse and assailed the rock charts, they did so with grace and purpose. But yet here they are following up possibly one of the greatest albums of their career, definitely that of their 21st Century career, ‘In Requiem’, which merged the thick, tarry heaviness of ‘Icon’ with the big, bombastic chords and smothering, velveteen riffs of ‘Draconian Times’. There’s a feeling of the same careful balance, if perhaps granted an occasional shift of influence towards a more naturalistic ‘One Second’ in their gentleness, the title-track in it’s quieter moments having a whiff of ‘A Tout Le Monde’ about it before it explodes into a slice of dazzling post-gloom cloud-parting. It’s in the shifts and subtleties that it comes back to dignity, for were this any other band, one less sure of themselves and what they want from their art, words like ‘safety’ and phrases like ‘treading water’ would be the order of the day. So convincingly Paradise Lost have crushed all pretenders and reclaimed their gothic metal throne over the last five or six years that eventually the dizzying ascent would have to level out and ‘Faith Divides Us…’, whilst most definitely another intoxicating flood of throbbing melancholy that leaves you drunk and reeling, is destined to be compared to the album which precedes and double up in the same triumphant chapter of their biography. Paradise Lost, 'Faith...' album review in Rocksound Magazine

ROCKSOUND MAGAZINE OCT. 2009 ISSUE 127

PARADISE LOST ‘Faith Divides Us – Death Unites Us’

‘Faith Divides Us – Death Unites Us’ is a record of epic beauty, with so many moments of genius it’s frightening. Paradise Lost have continued with the epic twisting melodies that their atmospheric gothic metal represents so well, never sounding miscued against the moments of dark that recall their doom origins. A string of highlights run through every chord of majestic opener ‘As Horizons End’ and continue right until the moving finale of ‘In Truth’. How a talent like Paradise Lost can hail from this very island and not be revered by all is incomprehensible. A fantastic record. 9/10

PARADISE LOST – post new album’s title-track & reveal cover artwork!

British gothic metal act PARADISE LOST will release their highly anticipated new album “Faith Divides Us – Death Unites Us” on Century Media Records on September 28, 2009 in Europe and October 6, 2009 in the US. Now you can catch another glimpse at this gloomy masterpiece as the album’s title track has officially been launched at http://www.myspace.com/paradiselostuk

Nick Holmes (vocals) comments on the track as follows: “This song had a massive overhaul in the last few weeks before recording, and thankfully it worked out well. Unlike many bands, we try to know exactly what we are doing once we are in the studio. So re-writes near recording time are as scary as they can be can be rewarding. This song is swathed in melancholy and the closest thing on the album to a “ballad” perhaps. Lyrically the title says it all. I find faith an oddity in that some people may have such devout belief that the only common ground with another human is death itself.”

The album’s artwork, which is based upon a Danse Macabre woodcut by Hans Holbein the Younger (first published in 1538), was created by Stefan Wibbeke at Medialogistics (Lacuna Coil, Poisonblack, etc.). You can view it in a higher resolution at the following link: http://specials.centurymedia.de/myspace/paradise_lost_faith_divides_us.jpg
