Arizona-based Dina Preston Band visited Hungary during September 7-14, 2013. They gave stunning performances in Budapest, Eger, Debrecen and Pecs and highlighted the best of what American country, bluegrass and rock can offer. In Budapest, at the Millenaris Cultural Center they performed in the framework of Nyelvparade (Language Fair), a study fair where the Embassy set up a booth to promote opportunities to learn American English and provided information on scholarships to American universities. An audience of hundred people from a wide-range of age groups enjoyed the performance and requested a number of anchors. Band leader, Dina Preston, who has a doctorate in Business Administration, also gave lectures throughout the bands tour on small business global management, and marketing. At the American Corner Budapest she talked to the full-house audience about a small business’ opportunities to engage in global markets and work internationally. In Eger, the local Shopping Mall and Community Center, Agria Park, provided an excellent out-doors location and the band called up excited local girls to the stage to sing with them as vocalists. The energetic and engaging style of the band created a vibrant atmosphere and thereby strongly strengthened U.S.-Hungarian people-to-people relationships and lead to the reinforcement of the Embassy’s positive image among Eger citizens. Dina Preston and her band made a splash on the third leg of their Hungary tour in Debrecen on September11, 2013. The band’s concert in the Debrecen Cultural Center was a resounding success where they performed country music infused with pop, rock and jazz. About 100 people attended the concert along with two local line dancing groups. One of their songs was dedicated to the victims of 9/11 and another one was especially composed for the Hungary tour. Before the concert, Dina Preston gave a presentation on small business management at the University of Debrecen discussing topics as differentiating yourself in an international business environment, ethical awakening, environmental sustainability and industry norms and standards. The presentation and the concert were supported by the local American Corner. In Pecs, the band performed in the Ghandi High School, the most important secondary school in Hungary that helps disadvantage Roma youth to develop their skills. The band enchanted the young Roma audience who sang and danced along with the musicians. Significance: With the assistance of the American art envoys Mission Budapest could showcase cultural diplomacy at its best. A number of media (kulturpart.hu, Eger and Debrecen online media) informed about the performances and the Embassy’s support of bringing the Dina Preston Band to Hungary. By selecting a versatile envoy, the Embassy turned the Department’s economic statecraft into practice and made young people think business-savvy and highlighted business opportunities that can lead to creating their own small businesses. The band reached out to disadvantaged groups of people and showed good examples of providing equal opportunities for all.
The Dina Preston Band has been invited by the U.S. Embassy in Budapest to perform throughout Hungary from September 6-September 14, 2013. The goal of the tour is to expose Hungarian students and the broader public to authentic American music genre such as country, rock and blues. The band’s touring highlight includes a patriotic performance in Debrecen, Hungary to commemorate September 11. The band will also perform in Budapest, Eger and the city of Pecs. http://tinyurl.com/my7jlu4
