Music is Therapy

recently wrote the following brief article on Music is Therapy on my website. The opening line suggests the basic premise, you don' have to read any further :-)

Music is therapy when it helps you connect with a conscious, heart felt experience of life.

It is an age old philosophy that claims that "music heals", or assists with healing. It is no secret that music can calm the mind and soothe the soul. Music can have a powerfully therapeutic influence at home or at work. A healthy, conscious connection to life, holistically, in the sense of body, mind and spirit harmony is an uplifting experience that imbues one with a sense of healing. This begins with relaxing body and mind, soothing the nervous system and fine-tuning one's conscious awareness. Being Ambient Music Therapy is especially composed with considerations of such healing, consciousness activating qualities.

Consciousness

When the heart is open and the mind, still can we understand what cannot be understood. Consciousness is a state of being.

Consciousness is awareness of the hidden force that powers all that is. Through conscious awareness we realize our potential as beings of love and light. Without consciousness we are ignorant of the energy source that causes the sun to shine and of the turn and orbit of the planets, that allows trees and plants to grow, and the animal kingdom to exist.

In a state of being where the mind is clear of thought and open to intuition and the heart free of fear and clear of negativity we become one with the energies that is life. Waves of this life force causes the swell on the ocean to break as waves on the shore, a bigger universal force part of a greater whole of galaxies and dimensions so vast and mysterious that we can only begin to comprehend time-space intellectually.

Yet the ability to understand all of this is illuminated by the simple practice of meditation. In meditation we realize that our lives are lived and dreams dreamed by virtue of an energy inside yet not of us. In meditation we awaken our connection with this energy field consciously - thoughts are stilled and the heart open, and the life force felt or experienced directly. The meditating mind then realises first hand that any one part of the universe is connected to every other part, an energetically interconnected whole.

It is human nature to look for meaning in life. Theories about the origin and nature of the universe abounds. Physicists, mathematicians, natural scientists, philosophers and artists have explored, debated and experimented in quest of uncovering the nature of the universe.

Humankind have looked for and found meaning in awareness of and honouring of the life force and some call it God, or by any of its many names, Krishna, Allah, Jehovah, Jah, The Divine, thousands more. Some long to be in the presence of their God's light, some live in fear of it, some wants to prove God exists, others deny God, oppose God or disprove God. Others think of the life force as an expression of God. Be that as it may, named or unnamed, conceptualized or intuited, the life force exists.

Without it there would be no breath, no living thing on earth, the universe would be dead. We cannot fully rationalize the awesome beauty or terrible terror of life. We can only feel or experience love and fear, and know it to be real through our consciousness - the ability to be aware. Through our conscious awareness we can connect to the life force that is the universe, and know ourselves.

This consciousness is not a concept or mental construct, as life continues In the absence of consciousness. The light of consciousness, however, transforms life into a gift, a prism of layered dimensions filled by the light of love and life.

Without consciousness we live in the shadows, blinded by the light. Consciously we acknowledge our dark side and embrace love.

Music for the Next Age

In my bio I wrote: This music is composed in a quest for well-being and made to inspire well-being - music for greater consciousness. Consciousness raises our vibrations, to counter the effects of pollution, stress, greed and other negative energies. Music for the next age.

As a yoga teacher my motivation to make music is greatly influenced by what is thought of as New Age. When I started out in music though it was the traditional way of playing songs on an acoustic guitar, and the mood was more often melancholic than not. I have always love the spirit of the blues, and the melodic noise power of bands like Boston and guitarists like Dave Gilmour, and the pop rock of Fleetwood Mac at their best, and still do. My own music making This all changed though when I got into the whole Buddha_bar vibe via the early Cafe Del Mar's and later chill lounge and mellow house, which sat far more comfortably with my yoga practice and a growing interest in electronica, especially the ambient Eno, which I find perfect for meditation and yoga.

So when I started out doing my own music recently, joining the world of midi and digital home studio production, it was logical for me to work in the genres of my new interests, and replace introspection and band/live rock with a healthier mix of self-awareness, ditching navel gazing with holistic expansion. In our troubled times I prefer to connect with clear, simple sounds, without chaos or turmoil, and I mostly prefer instrumental music over verse-chorus songs. My search has become a journey towards greater well-being, for our planet and all its inhabitants, and this begins with my own personal journey towards wholeness. Making this journey is one that many, many people are waking up to at this stage of human consciousness.

So let us flood our personal worlds with consciousness raising music-music that raises our vibrations, energises us, calms and centers us, inspires us, to counter the effects of pollution, stress, greed and other negative energies. Music for the next age.

Ambiently categorically

Much has been written in attempt to define what "ambient music" really is. Fortunately it does not really matter all that much, unless you are an artist trying to find the right category for you music so people can find it online, or if you file CD's in a CD shop "ambient" can also go under "instrumental" or "electronica". Advantage of the internet sites is that there multiple placings available - so my new free download that really belongs under "orchestral" or "instrumental" can also go on my "ambient" page. All music does, after all, create ambience :-)
