Faust: From Glory to Infinity

New York's PR, normally known for serving up raw & primal black metal acts, seems to be getting into the death metal scene of late, and their latest release From Glory to Infinity by the band Faust (no, not the old German prog/avant-garde group) is quite a solid platter of technical and brutal death metal. Once you get past the eye popping drawing of a naked, large breasted nun on the front cover, the music of Faust is actually quite engaging, which is no surprise when you consider some of the participants. Somewhat of a 'supergroup', Faust was formed by guitarist/vocalist Aleister in the early 90's, and for this new recording he has assembled for the band Ghiuiz Borroni (Profanatum) on guitar, Luca Princiotta (Doro, Blaze, Clairvoyant) on guitar, Steve DiGiorgio (Death, Testament, Sadus, Iced Earth) on bass, and Derek 'Daray' Brzozowski (Vesania, Dimmu Borgir) on drums. Pretty good pedigree to say the least, and the album was mixed and mastered by Juan Urteaga at Trident Studios, so if you are familiar with the work he's done with Testament, Exodus, Vile, and Sadus, you can expect a great sounding final product here as well.

Make no mistake about it, From Glory to Infinity is a brutal record from start to finish, but it's an extremely well crafted one that contains plenty of technical passages and lots of melody. Alester's growls are totally old school, straight out of the Morbid Angel/Death/Obituary playbook, and quite refreshing to hear considering how many extreme acts like to mix in hardcore shouts, black metal screams, and clean vocals into the mix these days. Musically, the songs here are quite impressive, featuring plenty of smoking guitar solos, acrobatic bass work from DiGiorgio (this guy is and has always been a monster player), and powerful yet nimble drumming. It's almost hard to pick specific highlights on this one as all the tunes are very impressive, but a few to point out are the majestic "Carnal Beatitude", the galloping "Holy Hole", and the mix of brutality with ultra-technical arrangements on "Purple Children". There's quite the 'epic' flavor to many of these songs, especially evident on "Wet Veils", where the layered, complex guitar riffery delivers a grand, melodic, and classy feel, perfectly complemented by relentless blast beats, intricate bass lines, and virtouso guitar leads.

In short, this is a highly recommended death metal release, and here's hoping that little PR can make the world aware of this powerhouse act.

FAUST - From Glory to Infinity [2009 LP]

C'è solamente da inchinarsi. Dopo un lavoro simile, c'è solamente da inchinarsi. Il buon Aleister (eclettico musicista impegnato in passato anche con Ancient), mastermind del progetto Faust, coadiuvato da musicisti con palle di dimensioni monumentali (ne parleremo dopo), ha tirato fuori questo From Glory to Infinity, un disco che non ha nulla, assolutamente nulla, da invidiare a produzioni estere iperpompate ed iperblasonate. Dicevamo che la Line Up dei Faust per quest'opus è, parafrasando, degna di menzione: il motivo? Semplice. Ad accompagnare Aleister in From Glory to Infinity abbiamo nell'ordine: alle chitarre Ghiulz Borroni (Profanatum) e Luca Princiotta (axeman dei Clairvoyants, Blaze [!!!] e Doro [!!!!!]); alla batteria Darek "Daray" Brzozowski, che è giusto giusto il live drummer dei Dimmu Borgir; ma è al basso che Aleister ha fatto il colpo, essendoci infatti nientepopodimenochè Steve DiGiorgio, che, per i più ignoranti, è stato (oppure è) all'opera con Autopsy, Death, Control Denied, Testament, Iced Earth e Vintersorg.. e questo solo per citarne alcuni. Passando al cd, From Glory to Infinity è un album di puro, chiaro e semplice, violento Death Metal di stampo americano. Poco spazio alla melodia, anche se non è assente del tutto, blast beats a manetta, sezione ritmica assurda e riff taglienti come nemmeno i più affilati bisturi. Si va dalla violenza strabordante di tracce come Purple Children e Wet Veils, alla roboante cavalcata di Golden Wine Countess passando per la molto più complessa Sentimental Worship. E siamo solo alla prima metà del cd, dove ogni singola nota è una goccia di stillicidio. Si nota benissimo, in fase solistica, come Ghiulz sia ispiratissimo, con soli dal sapore neoclassico che danno quel qualcosa in più (come se ce ne fosse bisogno, poi) all'album. Precisamente a centro cd abbiamo Servants of Morality, dove i Faust fanno bello sfoggio di tutta la loro tecnica. Ma dimenticatevi di tecnicismi fini a se stessi, qui il tutto è al servizio del Male, della violenza sonora, dello stupro auditivo. Finanche il lunghissimo assolo ha un qualcosa di diabolicamente divino. Ancora uno splendido mix di Death Metal ed Heavy puro si interseca nella spettacolare Carnal Beatitude, il pezzo che maggiormente mi ha colpito dell'album. La tripletta finale è composta da due brani rapidi, ma non per questo meno dolorosi, come Pig God Dog (strumentale dove di nuovo chitarre neoclassiche fanno il paio con ritmiche serratissime) e A Religion-free World's Dream, e la più lunga Holy Hole, traccia nella quale il messia di tutti i bassisti mette in mostra perchè è lui il numero 1. La prova vocale del mastermind dei Faust è a dir poco perfetta, col suo growl incisivo, sporchissimo col quale vomita tutta la perversione e l'anti-cristianità che fanno da tematiche principali ai lavori della band. Ora, secondo voi una qualsiasi Label italiana ha sotto contratto la band in questione? Ma ovvio!!, no. Questo ci fa capire una cosa importantissima: i discografici (metallici) italiani, non capiscono un cazzo. Non sto qui a darvi conclusioni finali su come è o come non è From Glory to Infinity: dopo tutto quello che ho scritto, se non avete capito che è un capolavoro, scusatemi, ma sareste cerebrolesi. Semplicemente: amate il Death Metal? Faust è la band per voi; amate l'Heavy e vorreste magari sentire come il vostro genere suonerebbe intersecato ad un sound decisamente più estremo? Faust è la band per voi. Insomma, From Glory to Infinity è un disco Metal a 360°.

This album in fucking stellar from the first second to the last. A solid disc of death metal, the old way from the eighties and early nineties. Melodies everywhere, but still brutally raping your ear. Speedy parts. Slow parts. Heavy parts. Light parts. Hard parts. Soft parts. Everything that makes true death so amazing is found on this album. Fans of Morbid Angel, Death, Vader and Necrophagist: get this. It's so intelligently done, it's thought out, and it's amazing. 9 out of 10. I just wish it was longer.

Track-By-Track Review of Faust's "From Glory to Infinity"

Purple Children - Intricate, but not too complex guitar work, with drum-tight drumming (pun intended) and some mean vocals. This song sets up the rest of the album's tone and mood, and it's a great song. Metalgasmic solo at 1:38, and I get scared everytime I hear it when I'm driving: it sounds like a goddamn cop siren right at the start of it!

Wet Veils - A song about slutty nuns, this is one rocking tune. The instruments are just amazing. Another Metalgasmic solo from Ghiulz at 2:30, lasting for 36 seconds. Aleister's solo at 3:28 is a nice and relaxed mini song unto itself, 4:02 is it's end point.

Sentimental Worship - Continuing with the slutty nuns, this time they are into whipping and ropes and hot wax, this song is great if you're a bass player. Steve DiGiorgio has a deadly bass solo at the 32 second mark, fifty seconds of slow awesomeness, and another at 3:50. From this song forward we get to hear the legend's work a little more pronounced, which makes me happy as hell.

Golden Wine Countess - This song seems to be a story of an orphaned girl who becomes a "noble tart" for "politicians and prelates". It sure would seem that Aleister has a dirty mind, but he's never really graphic about it. Steve DiGiorgio is rocking a fast bass line with fast drums from Daray, while Aleister and Ghiulz and Luca play slower guitar riffs.

Servant of Morality - I love the opening riff to this song. It's nice and heavy, something about it is even Sabbath-y. It's got a lot of speed after the first verse, with awesome work on solos from Ghiulz and Aleister, but I don't think there's a lot of whammy bar work, which I like.

Carnal Beatitude - Daray's drumming in this song really fucking rocks. Lyrically, it's another attack on the church, but unlike a lot of bands that are antichristian, Faust does not just say the same thing over and over again in the songs. Some songs might have similarities in theme, but Aleister keeps his lyrical ideas fresh every song. And, for those that might have things confused if you haven't checked out Faust, it's not a satanic attack, it's just antichristian.

Pig god Dog - An instrumental based on alternating solos from Aleister and Ghiulz. Simply Metalgasmic.

Holy Hole - A lyrically hilarious song, the Holy Spirit is a "plucked pigeon", and Jesus Christ is born from Mary's ass, and thus is the "King of scat, Lord of all intestinal parasites." The last verse is great, telling King Herod he "lost" and is "condemned to curse a piece of shit". So fucking rocking musically, too. Everything is tight, perfect. Daray is just slaughtering his poor drum kit, while Aleister, Luca, and Steve are destroying their axes. Aleister's throat seems to be taking a beating in this song too, his voice is really deep.

A Religion-Free World's Dream - The last song, sadly. It's an instrumental full of gorgeous rifface and it's nice and mid-paced. Something to bang your head and pump your fist to. The only problem is it's too fucking short, ending at 2:06.

From Glory To Infinity by Faust is melodic death metal at it’s finest. This CD is predominantly death metal, with some traditional metal and thrash along with progressive elements as well. For those of you who are reading this review simply because of the CD cover, you should know this is not music for the timid. If you’re one of those people that listen to one-dimensional radio music, if you never buy CDs and only listen to what pop radio wants you to hear, then this is definitely not for you. This is brutal death metal that’s not intended for the simple mind. The song writing is dynamic; the execution of the songs is masterful; and the production is clear, leaving nothing to be desired. From Glory To Infinity is very much the perfect death metal CD on all levels. If you don’t like death metal, this CD probably won’t change your mind. What it does do is satisfy the need for extreme listening by those that truly love this genre of music. The lead vocals are in the low register, using the traditional guttural technique. Aleister’s tone is perfect for this style of playing, unlike the new mutations of “wannabe” death metal that scream aimlessly using a higher tonality. The lead and rhythm guitars show what death metal guitar playing is supposed to be. When you hear Ghiulz and Aleister solo with such precision, it makes you ask and wonder why. Why do so many other guitar players elect to not solo throughout their music? Maybe it’s because other guitar players can’t. Again, speaking of tonality, this duo nails it with a perfect guitar sound. Their solos are fluid, melodically phrased and dynamic. For extreme listening like Faust, the rhythm section is perhaps even more important than in any other genre of music. The bass and drums on From Glory To Infinity are big in production, very rhythmic and quite audible. There is a clear distinction between the two; neither gets lost in the mix. The bass can be described as lead bass. Steve DiGiorgio is not one of those players who simply ride the root note. He’s on top of the rhythm taking a foreground approach, incorporating quarter, eighth and sixteenth notes. The drums are clearly the backbone of this recording. Combining metronomic blast beats, thunderous double bass and the occasional progressive odd time, Daray helps make From Glory To Infinity the melodic death metal masterpiece it is. He doesn’t allow himself to be limited to one genre with his playing. Daray draws from many different genres of music with the diverse beats he chooses to use. Many drummers out there could definitely learn from his example of quality drum playing and precision time keeping. With emphasis on song writing and execution, From Glory To Infinity is melodic brutality to the core and guaranteed to satisfy all listeners of extreme metal.
