That girl has had her eye's on you. She's watching everthing you do.
I felt like communicating today so here it goes…
My mother is in town and every time she listens to my music she has a million questions about what I am trying to say. I am sure anyone out there who listens to us wonders what I mean to say, and might find it interesting to contrast where i was coming from with what they have developed as their meaning for the song.
I was reflecting on my musical beginnings a little bit while i was talking to my mom yesterday, I started singing before I can remember and was constantly met with challenges from my brothers and sisters telling me to shut my mouth. Singing was the earliest thing I knew that I could do as good as everybody else. While my family was sick of hearing me, my mother and father always pushed me to sing in church. She would set up my gigs and I would get so nervous standing up in front of all those people and making sounds come out. I felt so much emotion in what I was singing and I enjoyed the rush of offering up something in front of people.
I think I am somewhat autistic when it comes to music. When I write something, I play the music over and over whether it be piano or guitar and I make sounds with my voice that match the way the music makes me feel, then I go back over those sounds and replace them with the words from my life that match the feeling. The result is a very real experience that has touched me. I feel blessed to be able to share the experience with you through my songs.
Another way I wrote in the past was to have Willy come to me with words and then we just work out a chord progression that fits the syllables and is catchy. Then I would start singing the words in some freaky tune and he would usually like it. Willy and I have written some of my favorite songs this way. One time we were messing around on the piano at the delt house when I was going to USC (probably very late at night) and got some chord progression stuck in our heads. It was three chords and the accompanying autistic sort of sounds I was making to go along with the piano. We quickly ran home and Willy got his pen out and I got out the guitar and we wrote "Turn". The whole way home from the delt house we were singing the three chords over and over so we would not forget them. That is how we do it.
We are currently working out a deal with some friends of ours that will be for me the result of many years, working with Willy and lots of others, (Sam, Jon, Kelly, Taylor, Courtney, and Scott) and currently Dana and Tim, to develop our sound into something that somebody else sees has potential to connect people. In fact our friends see it so much that they feel good about sinking their money, time and efforts into us.
anyways, this was supposed to be about my songs and what they mean so for my mother and anyone else who has asked, "Phone call" is not about me cheating on Rachel, Light My Return is Willy's wife's initials before he married her, Thursday is not about smoking drugs but is about flying around the USA doing my dental interviews and "Control" is about the problem I have with thinking that in order to do anything good you have to control yourself. I definitely do things from passion more than control.
We are currently recording and being extremely reclusive, please visit us here at www.reverbnation.com/kiltergreyband as often as you can. You can purchase our last cd "requiem of all things broken" @ cdbaby.com/kiltergreycd The song is about putting to bed all the broken shit I had been carrying around for a while, and the cd is a whole bunch of other things.
Welcome to our ReverbNation site. We have worked hard and have not rushed any part of this music. All our songs have come to us at their own pace and time. The message in our songs remains the same for the most part. We sing about the things that hurt the most, feel the best and last the longest. We have been compared to REM, COUNTING CROWS, and DMB.
We formed in Idaho from a small ball of clay and we have taken on many forms. We have played shows in attics, coffee shops, and lots of cool places in LA over the last 5 years. We encourage you to look as close as possible at the music. We hope you will be able to feel what we get from from it and we hope to be playing it near you really soon. Help spread the KilterGrey Word!!! Play our music on your sites, tell your friends, use out widgets. -KilterGrey
