Kaley Bird .......... If you want something done right ...

MUSIC Kaley Bird If you want something done right ...

BRYAN BIRTLES / bryan@vueweekly.com ‘I always played in the basement and I had so many songs written but no one is gonna hear them if you never play them. I enjoy things that are challenging for me and that make me uncomfortable and I just wanted to prove to myself that I could do it.” Kaley Bird might never have been across a coffee shop table from me if it weren’t for a particular moment where she screwed up enough courage to step onto an open stage and play some of the songs she had been working on in front of an actual audience, but she did. And once she did, things started falling into place for her almost immediately. The reaction was good, she was offered a couple of return gigs, she was able to put a band together and recently she recorded a CD that will be released this Friday at Alberta College’s Muttart Hall. But none of this would have come to pass if Bird hadn’t picked up her guitar again after being frustrated by it in the first place. “I got it for Christmas in grade six from my dad and I think he showed me three chords, but when you’re first learning the guitar you suck and it doesn’t sound like anything and it’s brutal, so I kind of quit and didn’t play it for a while,” she remembers. “Three or four years later I sat down and my dad taught me this cool lick with barre chords and it sounded like something so I thought, ‘Sweet!’ and I started playing every day.” It hasn’t been as easy as it sounds, and though she can be endearingly self-deprecating, Bird has worked hard to get to this point and doesn’t plan to stop until she gets to where she wants to be.

“I do everything myself. I book myself, I organize all the shows, I have my own PA, I rented all the lighting, I get all the tickets and put up all the posters,” she explains. “It’s ambitious, but I think if you work really hard and put in the time—I mean, you can always go with a booking agent or a manager but, y’know, I always know how hard I’m working to get gigs and to get my music out there, but I would never know how hard someone else is working on my behalf. I guess I’m kind of a control freak that way. For me, I think you make your own opportunities and you make your own breaks.” V Fri, Jun 27 (7:30 pm) Kaley Bird Muttart Hall, $10

Budding Songstress Takes Flight by Elicia Weaver

Connecting with the hearts of young and old with her mature poetry and sincere performances, Kaley Bird couldn’t be happier these days as she pursues her dream of a lifelong career in music. The 20-year-old singer/songwriter has been living in Edmonton since age 11, which is about the same time her dad bought her first guitar. Bird has been playing and writing songs since she was 15 and it wasn’t long after that when she began guitar lessons with Jamie Philp, a seasoned guitar teacher for the Grant MacEwan music program who also offers lessons to the public. The two started playing together less than a year ago but have already performed at various venues around the city and worked together on Bird’s self-titled debut CD, which was released in early May. With her folk/jazz/indie sound, Bird admits to being inspired by many different types of music but is quick to insist that her music isn’t limited to one particular genre. “If it sounds good and I like it, I’m not going to change that for anyone,” said Bird. She then laughs and adds with fake seriousness, “actually no, it’s totally pop music...I want to be Britney Spears.” Bird’s easygoing personality and witty sense of humour mark a significant change from the girl of one year ago who was taking classes at the University of Alberta. “I was really frustrated because I didn’t have any time to work on my music,” said Bird. “I just figured everyone wants to be a musician, or an actress, or a rock star, but that’s not really practical.” But when it was time for her second year of studies, Bird knew she had to go for it. The decision paid off, with Kaley being offered a gig after only her first open mic at a Second Cup last June. Bubbly, yet intently focused on her goals, Bird is very sure of her abilities but at the same time often reluctant to acknowledge their exceptionality. She might only stand five foot three, but don’t let her small frame and modest nature fool you into thinking she is less than prepared for the opportunities that await someone with the determination that she possesses. “Kaley exhibits an extreme ability with the business of music. She’s the complete package,” said Philp, her guitar teacher. “I see some big things happening for Kaley in the coming months and certainly in the next year.” When asked to describe herself in two words, and after a thoughtful few moments, Kaley light-heartedly responds with “quirky and caffeinated,” insisting coffee is what keeps her going. “My days are so long and busy, but that’s how I like it to be, because if it wasn’t, I would feel like I wasn’t going anywhere,” said Bird. “This way I feel like I’m moving forward.” Kaley’s mother, who was in band of her own while Kaley was growing up, is just one of the talents on the new album and sings backup vocals on several of the tracks. Kaley Bird’s new website, kaleybird.com is now up and running. All of her upcoming shows, including her CD release party, are also listed at myspace.com/kaleybirdband.
