Initial Period (2005/2006)
PAINSTYLE was born at the turn of 2005 to 2006. Bandfounder and guitarplayer CHRISTIAN HEIL (JOE) has been into Deathmetal, weird sounds and mad rhythms ever since he can remember. Up to this time, JOE had composed an extensive archive of musical ideas and song structures. To put that into practice with real musicians turned out to be more difficult than he had imagined.
JOE’s biggest problem was to find the perfect line-up to meet the challenges of his complex song-material. He spent a lot of time jamming with different musicians and experimenting with a variety of constellations. Three years later the search was over:

This formation played several gigs before it went on producing the infamous Painstyle Rough Demo (2008).
Burkhard Schmitt becomes new member/Rough Demo 2008
For this production JOE wanted more depth and density in the vocals. In December 2007 he invited over his friend BURKHARD SCHMITT of the hannoveranean combo HATE SQUAD to take part in some guest rehearsals in Painstyle headquarters at LANNY’S PIT. The cooperation went off pretty well. BURKHARD’s and JOCHEN’s voices matched in such an impressive way that only after a short time all members agreed BURKHARD to join the band.

The year 2008 brought bad news! Drummer Markus Christ had to leave the band due to his new job as drum instructor at the Konservatorium Leipzig. PAINSTYLE was forced to look for a substitute which was anything but easy. The decision that followed seemed logical for our times: publishing a search-blog via myspace. During the next three months PAINSTYLE underwent a nerve-racking process in which they tested a multitude of different drummers from Germany and abroad. Eventually it failed to bring about a new formation.

In the fall of 2008, PAINSTYLE’s destiny took an unforeseen but lucky turn. No less a drummer than MARCO MINNEMANN (KREATOR, NECROPHAGIST, EPHEL DUATH, PAUL GILBERT, H-BLOCKX, etc.) stumbled over our search-blog. He liked the music and got into contact with JOE to tell him he was interested in becoming part of the band and to make his contribution. MARCO is a world-class drummer and is surely the best choice for the job. With his incomparable style and his unmatched technical skills he breathed even more life into our songs. We’re glad we can count on his support, because we think his playing lifted PAINSTYLE to another level.
Parallely to all the things happening between 2006 and 2008, JOE wrote intensively on new songs. MARCO worked his way into the material incredibly fast. So, in December 2008, the band was ready to hit the studio for their first full length IN BLACK DESPAIR.

Recording of the debut-album IN BLACK DESPAIR (IBD) (2008 - 2009)
At the end of 2008 MARCO recorded the drums in his own SEASHORE STUDIOS at IMPERIAL BEACH, SAN DIEGO, CA. The rest of the band waited patiently until May 2009 when we moved PAINSTYLE headquaters from LANNY’s PIT to RAPE OF HARMONIES Studios in Thuringia. Under the direction of PATRICK W. ENGEL (majority of the instrumental recordings) and RALF MÜLLER (Vocal recordings), we completed the longplayer within a month.
MASTERING IBD / Conceptual album (2009 – 2010)
Due to personal changes at ROH we received the first master only at the end of 2009, the final master even another six months later. The temporal delay did not, however, influence the results negatively. We are all fully satisfied with the longplayer. Those producers involved in the mastering were PATRICK W. ENGEL (mix and master) and HENDRIK WINTER (final master).
In the end, the production took longer than we had expected. We are apologizing for that! But during this involuntary pause we did not settle back. On the contrary, in countless studio sessions we transformed the pure song material to a story-driven conceptual album. All of the spoken samples were conceived, written and produced by CHOCO and JOE and performed by native speakers. The sounds heard during the conceptual parts were created via elaborated technical instruments by JOE and HENDRIK WINTER at the ROH studios. In the production of the drums, we completely went without triggering and any other devices that could destroy the atmosphere! It was important for us that everything on the record is original and real!
In the production of this cd we spared neither money, time nor trouble. We believe this was necessary to create this true inferno which IBD is now.
Expect a hypnotic album which drags you into its suffocating universe of diabolic, dark and nightmarish dimensions. IN BLACK DESPAIR will rape your tiny asses like a 35 lbs jackhammer!
