It will be one year since the final round of The Break Contest, a contest we really only entered as a chance to play at The Stone Pony. What happened following that performance is hard to describe: we were on stage in front of a large crowd, some of whom were our fans but most of whom were people that had never seen us before. After we finished our set, we had a big group of people come up to us and ask about us, about our music and how to find us online. The week after our first gig at The Stone Pony, our Facebook fan base nearly doubled, and we had a ton of emails from people that had seen us play. When we looked at the bands that made it to the second round, we realized we had a lot of work to do to make it into the finals. We increased our rehearsal time, worked on fine-tuning our songs and we wrote several new songs. We never realized the amount of hours that we would have to put into the contest, but The Break Contest pushed us to take our music to the next level. We not only pushed ourselves and our musical abilities, but we also learned the importance of promoting ourselves online, selling tickets and letting people, who were not family members or friends, know about us- all to create enough interest to have them come to a future show. By the final round of The Break Contest, we had created so much buzz around us and the competition that we had the largest crowd any three-piece band has ever drawn in the competition. The Break Contest helped us realize that, besides writing and producing great music, we needed to draw fans to our venues to see us play, a lesson that helped us in The Break Contest and something that we're able to use in every concert we now play. Each Break Contest round brought us more and more fans and exposure. For the final round of The Break Contest, The Stone Pony was packed wall-to-wall with people. We had over 300 people come out specifically to see us, which would have never happened on a regular gig without the exposure The Break Contest gave us. So, because of The Break Contest, not only did we get the opportunity to play at Bamboozle, but we also more than quadrupled our fan base. Since entering The Break Contest and playing Bamboozle, we have been written about over a dozen times and our draw for concerts has increased tremendously. Our concert opportunities have not only increased in numbers, but also in quality, thanks to having Bamboozle on our résumé. On September 3, 2011, Going Dark opened for Big Time Rush at The Northern Star Arena to a sold-out crowd of over 8,000. On November 10, 2011, Going Dark opened for Sebastian Bach at Irving Plaza for our NYC debut. Going Dark's debut, full-length record was released on January 27, 2012 at their CD release concert at Montclair's Chill to a sold out crowd of over 700. When we entered this contest, we had no idea what to expect or what would happen over the four months of the competition, but it has been the best decision we have ever made as a band in getting recognized, gaining exposure and getting our name "out there." There is no other contest that offers what The Break offers, as far as rewards that continue long after the competition is over. Now we have been offered and opportunity to play The Break Invitational on Sunday April 1, 2012 at 3pm. We were one of ten bands chosen for this chance to play Bamboozle for a 2nd year in a row. For us to be able to play a festival with bands like The Foo Fighters and Bon Jovi, we are one step closer to realizing our dreams. Who knows what new doors will open for us if we are able to be part of The Bamboozle 2012?! Thank you to John D, David Smith & Chris Poulsen for helping us, for guiding us and for your continued relationship well after The Break Contest ended last year. The end of The Break Contest was not the end of a competition; it was the beginning of great things to come. And, a year later thanks to you, new things just keep coming! Oliver, LJ and Alex
