The Rolling Stones prided themselves as being a blues band, and NOT a rock and roll band. They loved assimilating early rock and roll greats, but their association with black American music was huge. Because they were such blues fanatics, I believe they were able to introduce their own interpretation of the blues to the white American population.
You can’t help but be turned on by all those great old blues players out there. Mick Jagger once said, “The Blues is not a form of music; it’s a sound that people make when they play.” Still, The Rolling Stones didn’t want to be called a rock and rock band even though their repertoire included greats like Chuck Berry, and the like.
