Fountain Song

I play piano on this unplugged instrumental by Dream Theory. Give it a listen: http://www.reverbnation.com/dreamtheory/song/21191813-fountain-song

Single Song

Vocalist Sharon Raquel has completed her independently-produced album of standards and new music, Infinite. I contributed "Single Song" to the project, a one-minute sample of which is on my playlist. Have a listen, then visit her site: http://www.sharonraquel.com/

QR Code Experiment

I turned the URL for my latest song, "Michael's Winter Hat", into a QR Code that is going on a poster and the back of some business cards. I think this will be a fun thing to hand out during breaks.

Lead Sheet Library

Hey, cats - I've been creating lead sheets for fellow songwriters for a long time, and I've started blogging them, under Creative Commons license. I am only posting songs that can be played with simple acoustic guitar or piano accompaniment. "Valentine's Wish" by Adrienne Townes is the current feature, and will stay up until Valentine's Day. Check it out: http://leadsheetlibrary.blogspot.com/

Happy Pi Day

March 14th, 3/14 is Pi Day. I re-posted "Pi Variations" as a way to celebrate. Stream it or DL while contemplating how much we owe to math and mathematicians.

Digital versus Real

My brother recently got the amazing Roland GR-55 guitar synthesizer, and we've had many discussions about the pros and cons of samples, patches, and real instruments. Putting to one side a some points about acoustics and hearing, isn't a digital recording of an acoustic sound the equivalent of a good digitally-produced sound? In fact, if you record over a mic in an ordinary room, you get the ambiance of the room, which will then affect playback. But if you record in a dead room, then you have to treat the signal downstream, just as you would with a digital instrument. And you have all the characteristics from the mic forward affecting the sound, even if playing and acoustic instrument live through an amplifier. Is it live or is it Memorex?

i suspect that a digital sample is made by recording one single note. when you strum an acoustic guitar, I am not sure what is going on, but it is more than just the sum of the individual notes.

Solo Gig

Thanks to Takoma Station for inviting me to play a full set of original music last night. Despite some sound system issues and a phantom djembe player who wouldn't take "no" for an answer, I was really happy to air out some music.

Air Play

They just played "When The Cherry Blossoms Bloom" on local commercial-free jazz station, WPFW. Sharon tipped me off - no chance to tape it. Hoping to catch her interview and of course the show at Twins Wednesday.

Did manage to tape the whole interview - she sounded like she'd done a million of them.

Two Songs With Sharon Raquel

Sharon Raquel is a vocalist I've accompanied a few times, currently working with the well-established Kash Wright Trio. She was interviewed on commercial-free WPFW and I wrote "When The Cherry Blossoms Bloom" both as a showcase for her voice, and just in case there was any problem airing the cover songs in her other demo. Hopefully the interview will air prior to her March 3 headliner at Twins Jazz on U Street in Washington, DC. Check out Sharon (with links to KWT): http://www.sharonraquel.com.
