Artist Bio

Pioneering a new blend of musical style, SPiNRaD incorporates rock, jazz-fusion, slap funk, and a poetic lyricism indebted to Dave Matthews Band, Coldplay, Steely Dan, and Sting. Touring many venues across the Midwest, their freshman effort, 'Long Sleep the King', sold out within days of release, and their follow-up album, 'Life Returns', is quickly following suit. SPiNRaD is made up of accomplished and experienced musicians who take their love of music seriously, and together are pursuing their highest aspirations.

This merge of musical genres produces a distinctive sound that encompasses the complex composition and minor tonality of jazz, the strong, rhythmic syncopation and groove of funk, and the dynamic sound and lyrics that create a strong emotional feel. SPiNRaD delivers an exciting musical experience, both in their albums and live performances, and they hope to make a lasting impression on today’s music scene.

More About SPiNRaD

Singer/songwriter and keyboardist, Dave Styer, began playing piano at age three and by age 12 began composing his own original music. His piano approach was largely crafted by meticulous study of such legends as Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, as well as vocal-centric inspiration from Dave Matthews and Chris Martin. These influences produce intricate and dynamic writing showcased within passionate performance.

Drummer Jeff Repo’s intense dedication to rhythmic precision is intrinsic to SPiNRaD’s music. His playing embodies the syncopated hi-hat work of Steve Gadd, the tight funky grooves of Steve Jordan, the unyielding snare work of Keith Carlock and the versatility of Carter Beauford. His loyal commitment to the study of his craft is responsible for his ability to change from traditional crossover drumming to an open-hand technique that he has distinctively made his own. His focus creates flexibility in his playing style, and allows him to support the creative flow of his fellow musicians.

Bassist, Sean King, brings the groove. Having a background as a drummer, he brings a percussive feel with techniques he shares with his biggest influences: Victor Wooten, Stanley Clarke, Larry Graham and Les Claypool. King also brings a pleasing accompaniment with his two-handed tapping harmonies. He possesses the ability to balance an ambient line, as well as lay down the funk so the audience finds it hard to sit in their seats.

SPiNRaD's saxophonist/guitarist, Austin Farnam, is a Jazz Studies major at Missouri State University, and has studied under such greats as Randy Hamm, Charlie Haden and Jeff Coffin of Bela Fleck & the Flecktones and Dave Matthews Band. Playing soprano, alto, tenor and baritone, Farnam’s style is a blend of LeRoi Moore's lush harmonies, Chris Potter's rhythmic versatility and the unusual creativity of Jeff Coffin, even emulating Coffin's technique of playing two horns simultaneously. When it comes to guitar, Farnam draws inspiration from such giants as John Mayer, Derek Trucks and The Edge. He incorporates his rich knowledge of theory, technical precision and warm ambient touch into his own creative and unique style.
