Artist Bio

Bas Clas (pronounced bahs clahs) is derived from a Cajun term meaning "low class." The band formed in the late 1970s in Lafayette, Louisiana and helped establish a rock scene in the area with its original songs and "marathon live shows" as one writer put it. The band drew accolades from the late John Hammond, who discovered and produced such legends as Count Basie, Billie Holliday, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen ("frankly, it does take a lot to impress me. Let me just say I'm impressed!") and attracted the attention of record producers, the press and music biz insiders. Nevertheless the band has remained somewhat obscure, having released 3 45rpm singles and a CD ("The Early Years: 1977-86").

In August 2011 Bas Clas recorded at Dockside Studio wtih engineer David Farrell. The recordings will be released in early 2012. The songs on this site are from that session. Guest musicians include Dickie Landry, Eric Adcock, Roddy Romero, David Greely, Christine Balfa, Mitch Reed, Leslie Smith and Mike Picou.

Bas Clas continues to perform its high-energy, Louisiana rock and roll. Join our mailing list and stay in touch!
