After a year of solo acoustic gigs in London, Berlin and New York by founder member Marc Ozall, The Autumnkind were born in the bitterly cold winter of 2008. Melding those solo tracks into melodic guitar-laden soundscapes, The Autumnkind began building a fanbase in and around London with a series of gigs at high profile venues such as The Borderline, The Cobden Club and the 02 Academy Islington, culminating in the release of their debut EP 'The Shipping Forecast' in 2009. ‘The Shipping Forecast’ garnered critical acclaim, at one point sitting above Robbie Williams and Michael Jackson in the Amazon download charts, and formed the basis of their live shows over the next year. 2010 saw the release of their second EP 'Words and Sound', which saw the band move away from the stark melancholia of ‘The Shipping Forecast’ and into rockier waters.
Rocky waters became a recurring theme for The Autumnkind over late 2010 despite the success of 'Words and Sound' and the ever growing fanbase in London and beyond, and in early 2011 the band had to start from scratch with the departure of bassist James Gruber, preferring life in the Royal Navy to that of an unsigned band. Keen to ensure momentum wasn’t lost, Marc and drummer Simon Treasure booked into Resident Studios to record an acoustic session which led to the release of the double A-side single Glasshouses/Brief Interruption in March 2011. It was during these sessions that they met recording engineer/producer Adam Lunn who, enjoying working with the band on the sessions to such a degree, agreed to join the band as lead guitarist. Bassist and long-time friend of the band Martin Bradford-Gago joined shortly afterwards to complete a new lineup, which stormed back into life in early 2012 with another series of gigs across London and Hertfordshire. With a new-found energy and enthusiasm, The Autumnkind went into the studio in the Spring of 2012 to work on their third EP 'Cartography'.
With a more organic sound in mind and the diverse musical influences and sensibilities of new members Adam and Martin, Cartography was a significant departure from previous records. Recorded at The Pool, where artists as diverse as Friendly Fires and Ed Sheeran have recorded, and mastered at the world famous Metropolis, ‘Cartography’ was released in August 2012, with The Unsigned Guide amongst others describing lead track 'Glasshouses' as 'original, fresh' and 'one of the most interesting and original submissions we have received’. 2012 sees The Autumnkind playing tracks from ‘Cartography’ at gigs the length and breadth of London, working on a video for Glasshouses and already finalising material for their 4th EP.
