“A dog foaming from its muzzle is certainly a fitting cover for Ill’s second album, “Gotten Gains.” Opener “One Time” is a rabid little sucker, a mongrel gone wild. Ill play heavy rock bordering on stoner, even grazing grunge a little (of the early-90s Soundgarden variety). “There Are Worse Things Than Being Alone” is an amazing song that sounds a bit as though it’s making use of parts from Slint’s “Spiderland” sped up. The sad and quiet “Christine” makes effective use of eerie drones (perfectly kept low in the mix), piano and a sparse, fragile melody on guitar, while the Zeppelinesque drums keep a slow, steady beat. The song concludes in an epic, massive way that makes your flesh crawl. It is probably the best piece on “Gotten Gains.” Ill smoothly pull it off to put a berserk uptempo track like “Castration” side by side with a dreamy piano-and-vocal piece such as “Gold and Opal.” An earthy, gritty album.”

“Do you like some distortion in your hard rock? Well, I do, and ill has plenty of it. With only a keyboard, a guitar, and a drum set, these guys create a buzzing symphony for the hard rock fan. There’s not just one, but two lead singers. There’s always the risk of fans liking one over the other, but it shouldn’t be the case for ill. Both guys have awesome voices that sound somewhat alike. You’ll definitely love the heavy guitar work found in their tracks. I find hints of blues here and there, and it’s a nice touch. You can get a copy of their self titled EP from their website - illrocks.com - and you can also buy their “out of print” first record Down In Deep.Their new LP is due to be released in early 2012, and we’ll let you know as soon as it’s out.
