The composer Ned Rorem said, "I compose what I need to hear because nobody else is doing it." This is very true for Rebecca Kopycinski and her music, billed as Nuda Veritas. This pursuit, of the new and uncharted, serves to provide an outlet for what Rebecca sees as truth, her truth. Toeing the line between folk and experimental soundscapes, Rebecca seeks to manifest aurally the bittersweet beauty of being human that oftentimes cannot be defined with words alone. The performance ranges from simple songs to epic ones to self-harmonized folk tune arrangements to multi-layered loops featuring bells, violins, guitar, spoken word tapes, clarinet, flute, and music boxes to a single vocal melody sung over drone (and whatever else she can dream up). This versatility allows Nuda Veritas to adapt to various performance opportunities, sometimes playing complete acoustic sets, other times playing quite a bit of improvised organic electronics, and sometimes a balance of the two.
Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, Rebecca grew up in an average working class family. She attributes much of her character to her family and what she calls her "blue collar charm." After studying classical vocal performance in college, she bought her Taylor and has been writing music ever since. She's lived in Burlington, Vermont for the past six years and doesn't plan on going anywhere anytime soon.
Since August of 2006, Nuda Veritas has been performing regularly in the Burlington, Vermont area, frequently at the Monkey House in Winooski. Other appearances include those at the Flynn Dog Gallery, the Radio Bean, the Skinny Pancake, and Langdon Street Café. In August of 2007, Rebecca organized a concert at the Battery Park band shell featuring Nuda Veritas, Pale Morning Dun, and the Boston/Portland, ME trio Brown Bird. She hopes to make this concert, called b(e) mused, an annual event. Rebecca played two sets during Burlington, Vermont's ever-popular Art Hop in 2007, one at the VCAM studio and another in the private studio of artist Jane Horner. Recently, she played in support of folk artist Alela Diane of Portland, OR and local singer-songwriter Jess Clemons at Club Metronome. In December of 2007, she played at Nine 37 Productions' Five Town Massive at Holley Hall in Bristol, Vermont, a multimedia festival scheduled over four days at the end of each year.
In the coming weeks, Rebecca will be recording an EP at the Flying Disc in Enosburg Falls, employing the skills of one Mr. Ben Maddox of the band Farm.
