About

MJAZZ & MODERN DUB

Seminal imprint set up by the genre defying, Justice in the mid nineties to cater for the more experimental side of dnb, perfectly summed up by the first release "Outside looking in" by Gliderstate, which encapsulated both the musicality and the ethos of the label. Following a string of critically acclaimed releases, the Icons "Emotions with Intellect" LP was released and drum and bass was never quite the same again. Due to to its rave reviews, its forward thinking nature, it had to be shelved for at least a year after its conception and recording, support from dj's and press alike and worldwide licensing, this firmly cemented MJAZZ's intention and presence, and remains highly regarded by many to this day.

MJAZZ continued from strength to strength and followed with release by established and newly discovered artist alike, which has become a fundament of the label to give a platform to emerging artist making interesting and challenging music. This period saw releases by Seeka + Justice and Justice + Tertius (Endemic Void).
With other commitments, Justice lets the label rest for a few years, whilst he busies himself with numerous solo LP's and releases, remixing and djing.

Fast forward to 2005 and MJAZZ is relaunched, and with some style, Justice + Neil Trix take the classic "Aquisse" and rework it into and electro tinged, detroit techno inspired masterpiece. Justice brings fellow veteran Endemic Void on-board for the flipside and they roll out "Monochrome" a highly pace , double bass workout which make the 12 inch vinyl a bumper package.

This is followed by the equally impressive MJAZZ 007 which finds Survival in the lab dissecting another Justice classic, "Airsign" and rolling it out in his own signature style. On the flipside Chris Inperspective laments about his "Love Lost" with tough breaks, cinematic female vocals, and detroit sensibilities.

During this relaunch period MJAZZ embraces the technological revolution and makes the digital download arena its primary platform. This has resulted in MJAZZ being able to push a considerable number of new artists, allowing their music to reach a wider audience. These include Control Remote's debut release "Wet static" on the "Mod Beats EP" as well as MJAZZ 's first experimental dub step release "Control Remote presents Modern Urban dub". The latter being so well received it has prompted the launch of Modern Dub, a sister label to carry such musical outings and primarily the vast catalogue from the Control Remote hard drive.

We also find Justice collaborating with Invincible, another debutant producer bringing us tunes such as the lush, rolling "Forever", skitty old school edginess of "Hindsight Correction", minimal avant garde sampling and electro vibes on what can only be described as "Unique" and the filtered up, rolling bleepines of "Plink".
In "Futuresound" they enlist the vocal talents of fellow cohort Golden and whip up a tech inspired vocal anthem that became Dj Flight's theme tune for her 1xtra radio show.
The Justice and Endemic Void partnership continues with "Follow me" in a dark, Hendrix inspired waltz and a broken beat battle erupts amid double basses, eerie tones, pianos and jazz dude samples in "Ghetto for a minute".

MJAZZ then starts to take in the developing scenes around the world of dnb and release Paranoid society's EP, who hail from Estonia and deliver 4 tracks of superb dnb, experimentation and music which find some of their tracks half way between dubstep and minimal drum and bass, again the nature of MJAZZ encourages and gives an outlet for these guys to preview their wares.

Keeping the european flavour ICR comes with "Sinking Again" and "Same new song" which is anything but as the Hungarian wizard works his magic infusing pianos, beats and atmosphere to his usual high standard. Currently "Love now on" a collab between Justice and long time friend and MJAZZ design guru Metro, is receiving airplay via many of our favourite dnb radio shows/stations, even getting rewound on many an occasion, now who would of thought it....?

And the future, what does it hold, impending releases by Justice + Chris Inperspective , watch out for "Cryptic lambs" Control Remote's LP on Modern Dub, more from Metro and plenty of exposure to new and emerging artists.........Plus much more........
